Rereading SSH, and I have some questions.

this is from pages 170-171

You have QJ

The blinds are both in and so is one limper

The flop is 973, and the SB bets.

"You certainly raise, even against agressive players. A flush draw and overcards is a strong draw. You should no longer lament a reraise; your hand will improve to top pair or better over fifty percent of the time.

In fact, if the reraiser is an agressive player, you should probably make it four bets. An agressive reraiser could have a little as a pair or a straigth draw. ..Your four-bet might cause your opponent to check the turn, allowing you to take a free card if you miss."

Why would you cap the flop and check the turn with the same draw? It seems if it were strong enough to cap on the flop, it would at least deserve a bet on the turn.

thanks

I think the point here is that on the flop you are trying to push the pot odds to the point that it is incorrect for another flush draw/low pair to call on a semi-bluff. If you haven't pushed him out by then and don't hit, why risk a more chips on the turn. Take the free card since anything that calls you down on a capped flop will likely call a single turn bet.

You are down to about 25% to hit after a blank turn, the pot is probably too big to fold to a single bet. I think a lot of people would check/call you down without the 3flush on the board after aggressive flop betting

i don't think it's a you HAVE to...more of a you CAN if you choose to.

you have a huge pot equity edge in this situation, and even heads up you can cap it all the way. but the point is on the turn you should slow down because now there's only 1 more card left that can help you.

i am equally puzzled. once the pot gets that humongous on the flop, you clearly have enough overlay on the turn to bet out your still-strong draw, even heads up. whay circumstance would lead you to take a free card -- i.e. GIVE a free card?
