Have been kicking around with ring PL Omaha High on
Golden Riviera lately.

I have played Omaha on from time to time to take a break from Holdem.

On this site I have found the uaual donks that don't know Omaha from GO FISH. and the occation good player. (Seek the former aviod the later )

I have found a group of players that like to raise it up preflop to like 5x or 6x the blinds. Not sure how to take these guys.

It was always my understanding that Omaha was about pot control and pot building and relied heavily on odds on the flop or later streets.

Is it just that I have'nt played enough and this is the norm or are these guys playing Holdem stratagies.

Thanks,
Why is it a penny for your thoughts but
you have to put your 2 cents in??

Somebody's making a penny!!

I have heard it said that there are 2 types of omaha players, those that believe NO hand is worth a preflop raise, and those that think ANY hand is worth a preflop raise.

I tend to think these guys are hold'em players, they often luck into a big stack, but (in SNG's) only keep it to the end very rarely. In low-limit cash games I see it a LOT more, I assume it is to build the pot just to the point where the orphan pot can be adopted with a pot sized bet. Talking pot-limit only.

Also in SNG's, I know I get into trouble a few times when it is 3 or 4 players and blinds are getting big and I think, "I had better try to steal some blinds", it never seems to work like in hold'em, it is omaha someone will call!

So I don't like to raise anything, but especially not JUST AAKQ or AAJT, if you rarely raise then when you do it is like screaming I have an AAxx hand! But I agree with something I read--not good at explaining this-- if you have a coordinated AA hand, and someone raises, and you can now reraise and get all-in or nearly all-in, then it is an appropriate raise.

I will be interested to see what others answer to this question . . .

FYP There are lots of people who will raise AAxx and nearly only that hand. Have to have notes on them to see how often they will stack themselves on scary flops as well.

As for raising preflop, some people will do it with any hand that can hit a flop hard. Hands like 5678, 9TQK and JJQQ can be worth a pot-pumping raise because if they hit a flop, it will get hit hard and more money is likely to go in while ahead.

Personally, I don't raise all that much (Pokertracker calls me Loose-Passive-Passive, I guess I am kind of a nut camper :P) but in position with a hand like As9s 86 I will definitely raise to steal the blinds. My raising requirements in early position are very tight, such as 4 broadways or AAxx double suited.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I'd imagine that the players at low limits are so horrendous that you'd want to be building pots to take advantage of all the mistakes they make post flop.
TheXianti: (Triptanes) why are you not a thinking person?

Miffed22001 is on a distinguished road
small stakes is about nut camping.
fwiw, i look to flop sets/nut flushes and i play a group of good connected cards, broadway or not eg AKQT or 5678

When you move up to shorthanded 200plo games for example you come against players who know how to the play game and its then more about trying to control showdown price with lukewarm hands (2pair)
Havent found time to watch the big pro's playing on FTP but id love to sit at some medium stakes plo games and see how they play (so far only managed a 600euro HU game on b2b)
