I have a pot equity question. I know poker is all about situation, table texture and so answer would be "it depends" but still i would be glad if you guys could help me in general principle here.

Situation:

Preflop: hero limps with PP early position and 4-5 people to the flop.

Flop: Hero hits set board is 2 suited
Hero bets, 4-5 people call.

Turn: flush completed.

what should hero do ?

if there is a flush out there then I am behind but still drawing live and if i bet and 2-3 people call and then a raise, i am building it that i might win. If there is no flush draw out there, then if i bet, then could win it outright/push out some straight draw/build the pot that i am heavily figured to win.

so is it +EV to always bet here ?

Case 2: Turn: flush not completed
hero bets, 4-5 people call

River: flush completed

what should hero do ?
i am drawing no more. a raise would suck. do i check call..or still bet out. 4-5 people calling...somebody gotta be on the flush draw ? which is +EV for me ?
check-call or Bet-raise-crying call.

Thanks in advance.

firstly, any time you limp a hand you need to be prepared for the reality that you may need to make the nuts. against that many limpers you need to be convinced that if someone doesnt have the flush already, they will have the nut draw and will not be laying it down. i normally proceed cautiously here and pray for the board to pr on the end.

as for pot equity, it is more useful to consider when you are the one drawing, as opposed to trying to protect a hand. simply stated, if you are 3:1 to make your draw, and there are four or more ppl in the pot, it is +EV to bet out even though you are guaranteed to have the worst holdings.

i thought pot equity decides whether I should be betting/raising....and pot odds decide whether i should be calling/folding. so pot equity in this case decides whether i bet out or check/call.

i could be wrong though.

case 1: bet the turn, if they caught one of their 9 outs, good for them, now you must catch one of your 10 :P

case 2: with that big of a field, i'm a fan of the bet/crying call, but then again i feel weak in a large field
