I notice a lot of you post hand historys where you've posted the blind right when you sit down instead of waiting for the BB. Is this a good idea? I can see a possible slight advantage to posting in the CO, but in other positions?

I'm usually patient enough to wait for the BB, but is there any reason to not wait?

I will post in the cutoff or hijack in a full ring game.
Posting is always -EV, but less negative than the cost of posting(1sb) Since you will often win after posting.
Also, if you think of a cost per hand, It costs 1.5sbs for 10 hands (1 round) or 0.15sb/hand
To post in the CO you get to see 7 hands for 1sb, for a total cost of 0.14sb/hand. So as a winning player, it is +EV to post in the CO in a 10 handed game.
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

online I'll post UTG+3 or further, if the game is off the wall crazy, i'll post UTG+1.

live game, it is even more important to post asap, because even total fish players will see you and wonder "why isn't he playing"
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

Most jackpot games do not require you to post for your first hand.
This varies by cardroom, but you often have the choice to "play now, or wait for the button."

Usually in a live game, I will sit my chips down, the dealer asks "would you like a hand" and if I am closer than MP2, I say, "I'll be right back." and take a quick walk.
This doesn't alert the fish quite as much.

I post when I'm MP and beyond in an online game.

In a live game, if we have to post when joining, I "take a break" if I'm close enough to the blinds. SSH even warns you about this.

The + or - EV of posting is too low to justify an everytime decision

I think that posting on the CO is something like +0.05SB compared to waiting for the big blind

Reasoning? If you wait until the BB, you're paying 1.5SB to see three more hands than you would by paying 1 SB
0.5SB for 3 hands
each orbit is 1.5SB in cost
So each hand costs .15SB
So after paying 1SB you save .5SB and play 3 less hands (two out of position, 1 in position) so on average you get around 0.05 more SB
Of course, since you're in half way in the small blind you'll get to lose a little less than the small blind every time you play, same with the big blind and the post. So it's probably even money realistically. So I can't say that posting is ALWAYS EV-

I always post in a live game, but often you won't have to post to start playing (my experience). Online, I often wait, but I will post in hijack or cutoff. There's not much to be gained image-wise by posting online.

I tried to find it and couldn't, but I'm almost certain I read something by Sklansky saying posting is so close to 0EV that you might as well do it to avoid looking too serious. I constantly pick up the blinds with any 2 when it folds around to me while the rock who just sat next to me waits, and that is fun.

hmmmm...so it's all about image. many times I sit down while I'm in the middle of the blinds and when the CO gets to me I will still wait for the BB. I've always wondered what this does for image. Do people notice or not? The live games I've played don't require me to post right away, they will let people wait for the BB.

To me, posting always looks like someone can't wait 2 minutes to start playing, they need to play NOW.

KoRnholio will become famous soon enough
Live, I only wait to post if I am within 2-3 hands of being the BB, if I sit down in any middle/late position I will post automatically. I think people do tend to notice if you're a tight ass who won't post right away.

Online I will wait unless I can post on the button/CO. People (me included) don't really pay attention to it. Plus I am usually multi tabling (3 or 4, nothing crazy) anyways so I don't mind starting off my session having more time to read/browse notes on some of my opponents.
