I play almost exlusively $3/$6 limit at a local B&M casino (occasionally play the low buy in NL on Party Poker). As I am sure all of you know, the pot rakes are signifigantly larger in live games than they are online. Where I play, it is $1 rake for every $10 of the pot up to a $4 max rake, plus $1 more raked when a pot reaches $30 or more for the bad beat jackpot. So every decent sized pot has $5 raked out, plus you tip the dealer a buck or two.
I am just curious if you guys think it is possible to consistently win under these conditions with good play? I am by no means a great player, but I have had many winning sessions, but of course many are not. I feel I am a decent player, but I'm just wondering if skill alone won't be enough to come out ahead more than not at this limit.
On a semi-related note, what do you guys typically buy in for at $3/$6 games? I usually buy $100 but am starting to think that is not sufficiant starting chips.

I'm in the same boat as you. Local games have a high rake, and the house wins. I think a good player can beat the rake in these games because the players are poor enough to cover it.
Typically I buy-in for $100 in a live 3/6 game, but when I sit I also put another $100 on the table so that it is "In Play" and can be chipped in if necessary.
If possible to move up to 5/10 or 4/8 consider it.

Unfortunately, the only alternative where I play is $6/$12 which is a little to steep for my budget. I agree with your statement about the poor players making the game beatable, most of my winning sessions are going in the evening when all the casual players pop in to try there hand at live poker. Some days it is can be rough though, seems like 8/10 people at the table are playing solid poker and you always seem to come in 2nd place.

No point in being the 10th best card player in the world if the other 9 are at the table with you
Then probably stick ot the best times for easiest games to help over come the rake.

You need to play these tables when they are full of fish. I play occassionally at local casinos, and I will only play on Friday and Saturday night or very late at night. I don't think they are beatable for anything worth your while unless there are a lot of fish at the table.
