I'm finding myself not always going "no set, no bet" when I have medium pocket pairs...specifically in situations very similar to this one...
Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (9 handed) converter
Preflop: Hero is SB with 8 , 8 . MP2 posts a blind of $0.5.
2 folds, MP1 raises, MP2 (poster) calls, MP3 calls, 2 folds, Hero calls, 1 fold.
Flop: (9 SB) 2 , 9 , 6 (4 players)
Hero checks, MP1 bets, MP2 folds, MP3 calls, Hero calls.
Turn: (6 BB) 2 (3 players)
Hero checks, MP1 bets, MP3 calls, Hero raises, MP1 3-bets, MP3 calls, Hero calls.
River: (15 BB) 6 (3 players)
Hero checks, MP1 bets, MP3 calls, Hero calls.
Final Pot: 18 BB
Am I losing money by playing this this way in 2 or three-way pots?

Yeah, you MUST bet/raise on the flop here at least for the information. If he raised you can either check/call it down if the board reamains low or fold the river if an A or K pops.
Oops I thought that was heads up. MP3 probably has the 9 so this be a laydown...

With his preflop raise MP1 wasn't likely to hold a 2, and only slightly more likely to have a pocket pair. MP3 was a total calling station. The type that call gutshots to the river and then call the river when they miss...

I think you can take one of 2 lines here.
Bet into the raiser on the flop.
or
call this down and let mp3 donate
Unfortunately, you're out of position. If youre behind to a PP you will get 3 bet on the turn. At the turn, you only beat 6x, 77, 55, 44, 33, or whiffed overcards. If your opponent is aggressive, check and let him bet your hand. Its not worth risking a 3bet when youre out of position to an aggressive player. You must check call this river after the hand played out this way.

on the whole i think this was well played given dan's reads. he repped the trips on the turn figuring the pre-flop raiser had two overcards, which he did. the raiser's 3bet was an extremely loose bluff. i would have slowed down at that point, which dan did, but i would have been real nervous about overcalling MP3 with a possible boat on the board. if MP3 caught any piece of the flop, no matter which piece, you're toast.

i don't like the 2 diamonds on the board. i like betting because it is likely that he will raise, possibly folding someone after.
if you check, he bets, and everyone calls profitably.
if you bet, and he raises, and someone cold calls it is obvious they are slowplaying a set or on the flush draw.
if the raiser calls, it's quite obvious they have overcards as well as any overpair would raise to protect from the flush.

Bet the flop, if he raises bet the turn, if he raises I muck. If he just calls he either has overs or is scaried of the board and is a wuss. If you dont bet the flop you cant really narrow down his holding. It is usually easy to sniff out AK and overs on the flop.
