My feeling is that the correct play was to call the turn and hope one of the following players raised and then re-raise them there with more in the pot or if not raise the river. Am almost 100% certain that was a better (and correct) way to play the hand so figured I may as well post here to both confirm it and remind myself in future

the D of 8's and D of 9's are easily soot dominated. Watch out. Seriously, i think you want to raise teh flop here always.

Yeah, was never going to raise the flop since I was still possibly behind with the co-ordination but think just calling the turn was the better line than the one I took since really I'm behind to like 99 and really only worried bout something for the straight flush like never.
I understand what you are saying about the 98s and I actually thought abour raising pre with it as a steal but then thought back to a cardrunner video I'd just watched and the comments about playing sc's in position for a call and try to flop big so thought I'd try that instead....definatly hands that can be dominated I agree and something I have to watch out for

I agree that calling the turn is the best option here, you have position on the aggressor and two to act behind you who could be calling down weaker hands or draws unless you force them out (as played).
The river should play itself

I raise the flop. 789 with a flush draw is a gross board to let everyone in behind you call cheaply for one bet.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Yup, 2 pair on the flop is a raise for value, especially on the button.
