In a local 10/20 game I am the button with AA

One player limps, I raise.
The BB calls, and the limper calls.

My raising requirements are pretty broad here, and most players know that. I simply have to think that I
A) have the best hand at the time
B) have a good chance of winning the pot by betting agressively.

The BB is a tricky, thinking player who will defend his blind with a broad range against a late position raise.

The limper is a tight, straightforward player.

The flop comes 986 with 2 clubs. I have the A of clubs.

The BB bets. This bet means that he has some piece of the flop.
The limper folds, and I raise. BB 3 bets.
Now the BB will not 3 bet in this position if he thinks that I have the better hand, So I know he thinks he has me beat.
He also knows that I would most likely bet this flop if checked to.
He is a tricky player, however, who I assume would wait until the turn to raise with a very strong hand, such as the straight or a set.
His original bet could be as little as a semi bluff with the flush draw, but the 3 bet indicates strength. I put him on 2 pair, as I call his 3 bet, but he could have as little as one pair if he put me on overcards. (which I am capable of raising with)

There is 6 big bets in the pot.

The turn is the Q giving me the flush draw, and more outs to a higher 2 pair.

The BB bets. I call.

River is the Q

The BB bets, and I raise.
In hindsight, this was a bad play. I was too rigid in my read.

The BB 3 bets, and I make a crying call. BB shows 88 for a full house.

By playing his hand straightforwardly, he got me to invest more bets than I would have had he played as he usually did.

Just a thought...
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

Don't be so surprised. Try it sometime. Occasionally you should save the fancy tricks and just bet.
If I had a hammer
I'd drop in the morning
I'd drop in the evening..
