Nut Shell Poker is a home game I created after the home game couldn't agree on which version of Pineapple to play. Nut Shell Poker is similar to Crazy Pineapple 8, which is my favorite game, but it's origin is based on a tournament format I encountered in Europe, NPL H.O.S 8. NPL H.O.S 8 is No Limit Texas Hold'Em, Pot Limit Omaha 8 and Limit Seven Card Stud 8, which focuses on differentiating the limit structures and eliminating the redundancy of Razz, 7 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud 8 in H.O.R.S.E tournaments.

Nut Shell Poker is a combination of No Limit Texas Hold'Em, Pineapple, Pot Limit Omaha and Limit 7 Card Stud in a single game, and it uses the same low as Crazy Pineapple 8 and a unique betting structure.

Here are the rules,

Nut Shell Poker has the same rules as Crazy Pineapple 8 (as played on UB) with the following exceptions,

Each player is dealt 4 cards pre-flop, after the flop, each player must discard one card face up (3 cards remaining) and after the turn, each player must discard another card face up (2 cards remaining). Pre-flop the betting structure is the same as Limit Hold'Em. On the flop, the betting structure is the same as Limit Hold'Em on 4th/5th street i.e the Limit is doubled. On the turn the betting structure is the same as Pot-Limit Hold'Em/Omaha etc. On the river the betting structure/pay out is the same as No Limit Crazy Pineapple 8.

The game uses the same AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD hand structure of Omaha, but it's forced to eliminate AD, BD, CD on the flop and AC, BC on the turn. Unlike Omaha, and like Pineapple, AB can used to declare the high and low, A or B can be used to declare the high and low, A or B can be used to declare the high or low or neither A or B can be used to declare i.e. the board is the high and/or low.

The betting structure pre-flop encourages people to enter the pot, while 4 cards increases the odds of draws and lows. The betting structure on the flop will encourage people to see the turn, while 3 cards increases the odds of the draws and the lows. The betting structure on the turn allows the high to force out one way draws, and the odds of of draws and lows are the same as Crazy Pineapple 8. The betting structure on the river is "insane," because quartering can cut a stack in 1/2 to 1/4 and people who call an All In with a set or less, small flush or ignorant straight are going to get punished. As people discard, you should be able to put your opponents on a hand, and vice versa, so bluffing the river is "interesting."

The Limit/Pot Limit/No Limit betting structure is fascinating, and we're using it for both Texas Hold'Em and Omaha 8 at the moment. The advantage to Nut Shell Poker over Pineapple is that it's a game with definite rules, it has more action (as sick as that is) and the discarding/betting structure requires a lot of skill on the flop, turn and river. It's an implied value as opposed to an expected value game, so high card strength all the way down to sets is low. If you enjoy implied value games, or you're just tired of "AA OMG AI! nOOb," then give Nut Shell Poker a chance. It blends Hold'Em, Pineapple and Omaha together at all limits and develops the card memory/counting skills from Stud, you'll never be board and you can absolutely break your opponents if you understand the value of Aces, draws, 3 to the wheel or 4 high cards.

If you do bother to play it, let me know what you think of it.

TLR is an unknown quantity at this point
The basic idea of the game sounds fun, however I do not like the betting structure, if I read it correctly it is an action junkie game, because the cost of seeing the flop is only a small fraction of the total size of the pot, and I assume most pots go to showdown

It is and it isn't, the problem is that if the game was limit then the action would be higher, and if the game was no limit it would be an EV instead of an IV game. Pot Limit is fine tho', it's the limit I started with and it reduces the action and strengthens the sets.

If you play LO, LO8 or Limit Crazy Pineapple 8, think of it as a game that invites the fish to enter the pot pre-flop and see the turn, and then think of the PL turn as the information and pricing out draws round, and then think of the river as the fold or value bet the fish round. It's less of an action game than LO, LO8 or Limit Crazy Pineapple 8 and more of a profit game. The "trick" to the game is in A2 suited or treating sets as the start of a drawing hand and then winning the high or the pot if the straights, flushes and lows don't hit.

If you try it PL, LMK what you think of it. I think the game is solid regardless of its structure, tho' NL would be bad. LMK what you think of discarding cards face up to, that's the thing that people either love/hate because it can reveal who is on the high and who is on the low and it can create reverse implied odds for people who discard the high or low. It can also torture people when you discard a high for another high. Sending mixed signals and the bluffing the river is often hilarious.
