Only my 10th or so hand at the table so no reads on BB. First hand they had played also. Fine or too weak?

There are a lot of lines you might run here depending on what you think of the BB. Without any more information your line was a very safe, pretty ok one.

What are the advantages/ disadvantages to betting the river?
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

I think you played it fine. The villain had shown nothing but strength from the beginning, so you didn't have any reason to believe betting would work. After he raised the flop, there really isn't anything you can do but check-call and hope you catch your draw. Otherwise, drawing become too expensive.

The BB turns out to be a rock (VIP < 10% and PFR < 1%) and his raises can be respected so High pockets, AK or AQ all possible.

If I knew this before the hand, do I fold anywhere? As then I'm only beating TT & AK. Check raise the flop then fold unimproved if he reraises?

I would only bet this river if I felt good about folding or caling a raise.

Total rock eh? hmm.. Could be AK of spades (given his check on the end). But not knowing that (but knowing he's a rock), I would check-call the river.
