This is something that comes up for me time to time and I'm wondering when this appropriate. Say you have something like AT diamonds, you raise pre-flop and the flop comes 3 clubs. How often do you just take a stab at it and fire out a bet? Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't. Do any of you only do this with position or have you tried when in EP ie: fire out a bet real fast and see what happens. Too aggressive (wasting chips?) or is this somewhat of a valid tactic?

PS - this isn't a all the time thing for me but I do try the odd time, mostly with position.

If I raised preflop I am generally going to bet the flop regardless of if it hits me or not. The only time I will not bet the flop is if I have 3+ other people in the hand and the flop really missed me, but is likely to have at least partially hit somebody else. In this case, betting the flop from any position is probably just a waste of money.

you dont have a lot of fold equity in LHE period, but if you raised pre flop and are HU you should bet in the situation you are describing.

This is another reason position is so important.

I'll only do it with Position HU or against 2 other players that I know might fold if the flop misses them. I think it tends to work in Live games more than online. I pulled this off 4 or 5 times the other night with my a couple of my missed AJs, AQo hands at a really tight 5/10 table. I think I had to throw in a turn bet a couple of times for the message to finally get through.

I only do it in the absolute perfect conditions. One or more calling stations and you might as well check and get a cheap showdown or turn card.
