Villain left right after this hand. He was 40/20ish. Note: I've been completely card dead, and this is the second hand I've played in about 15 minutes.

he check raised the flop and led the turn, but 5 handed that isn't anything real scary, esp from a 40/20. i like it
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

Only because it may increase the chance that SB would fold. But in this instance if you raise the turn and get 3bet (because he'll threebet you with a wider on the turn) and you cant fold to a 3bet on the turn because you'll have odds to your gutshot. And, by the river the pot is so big your hand is good enough here to call. I used to like the river raise because it annoys the crap out of your opponents, does wonders for your image against non-thinking players, and you wont get threebet by anything but the nuts against thinking players.

There are a number of reasons why I like a turn raise here.

1. Our hand is vulnerable and you would like SB to fold.
2. If our hand is best and SB is drawing, you want to extract the maximum.
3. It is almost impossible for a sane opponent to 3bet a worse hand here and therefore I know I don't have to call a river bet if this happens.
4. If villian is bluffing, he's never calling a river raise.

I like the river raise too but I think you're better served by raising the turn in this scenario.

You'd be surprised at how many opponents will bet/call the river with King high. Happens a lot at the 3/6 game, not so much at the 5/10 game but never say never .
