Here is the only hand that made me laugh today, although i saw even worse...
$0.50/$1 Limit Holdem
8 Players
Hand Conversion Powered by weaktight.com
Stacks:
UTG ($20.70)
UTG+1 ($12.15)
MP1 ($99.60)
Hero ($27.50)
CO ($1.90)
BTN ($17.75)
SB ($12.35)
BB ($25.05)
Pre-Flop: (1.5 SB, 8 players) Hero is MP2
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 1 fold, Hero calls, 1 fold, BTN calls, SB calls, BB checks
Flop: (5.0 SB, 5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, BTN checks
Turn: (2.5 BB, 5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, BTN calls, SB calls, BB folds, UTG+1 calls
i figure i just picked up a buttload of outs, and no one seems to want the pot. to me, this is a value bet. i dont think i am best, but with 5 players, i just picked up more than 20% equity share in this pot with a draw to the nuts, wheel draw, and the overcard A. The ace isn't likely clean, but no matter what hits, this pot is so small, i don't get any action (and can possibly steal, depending on how many players fold the turn) on rivers that hit me if i wait. 15 outs X 2ish is 30%ish equity in this hand.....5 players (20% equity share) gives me my PEE and my right to fire loosely here and see what happens.)
River: (6.5 BB, 4 players)
SB checks, 1 fold, Hero checks, BTN checks
no sense in putting any more money in this pot. there can't be any way i am best after several players call.
Final Pot: 6.5 BB
Hero shows a pair of Threes - Ace kicker

BTN shows

SB shows a pair of Threes

Hero wins 6.2 BB (net +4.7 BB)
HOLY CRAP!!! LOL

I would have played it the exact same way; no use betting the river with all those players. I guess great players think alike!
Nice hand, by the way. Nice to see there are bad players at .5/1 as well as .10/.20.

i think this is the right play but for the wrong reasons.
this can't be a pure value bet. you are only getting 4 to 1 if everyone calls. and that's highly unusual.
but it is a semi-bluff and a protection bet. you are potentially folding out stronger aces, gutshot draws that may chop with you, and maybe some weak pairs. all of that protects your hand. you are also at least giving yourself some chance of taking down the pot right there.

it was kind of a combination of ALL those factors. i may not have articulated that well.
the bet was because it "had" value to it.....quite a bit, actually, because any number of good things would/could result. a) take down pot, b) thin field, c) charge lesser draws pretty horrible odds, d) chance of actually being best based on action, e) building pot for 12+ out draw to strong hand, f) tying callers to pot when my draw comes in, and g) defining others' hands for potential river cards.
and, i am sure there are some other things i am not thinking of, or didnt think of at the time. but, those ARE the factors that immediately came to mind when i saw i had an opportunity. all those factors flooded into my head, and i quickly came to the conclusion i had license to fire, but would have to see what the reaction would be to decide what to do next.
it's definitely a VERY thin spot to bet in the first place, but we can agree it's justified. i posted it because i actually was best at the time...lol. BUT, upon further review, i can see the benefit to posting it here. limit is a game of small edges.....maybe not this small. but, it can't hurt to see these spots, or at least start learning to see these spots. and, fyi, i dont make this bet often.....i just dont see it like i should.

Basically it's just a semi-bluff, with the added benefit that you may well fold out better hands (eg A9, 32) while keeping worse hands in (eg: 5x, two clubs).
With so many players in, your "bluff" won't succeed outright very often, but you don't really mind getting called either, with so many outs/possibly the best hand.
