A, 3, 4, 7, 8

vs

3, 4, 5, 6, 8

7-6 - 6 is lower, wiener

You have to think, what hand would loose in holdem. That hand is a better low hand.

but the latter is also the better low (right)?


8-6 6 is lower, winner ah

Depends on the game you are playing, in most games A plays as both high and low, so the latter is a better low, this is applicable to most games with low (7 stud 8 or better, omaha hi-lo, Razz, A-5 3xdraw).
2-7 3x draw counts A as high only, so in this game 87653 beats A2356

One simple mechnism to determine the low is build a 5 digit number, with the highest card as the most significant number, 2nd highest as 2nd most signifact etc..., lowest number is the winner

So in your first example
87,431 > 86,542, so 86542 is the winner
