I've played NL exclusively. Lately I've been interested in possibly trying out Limit. Is Limit still a variation that enough people play poorly to beat consistently? Is online limit (microstakes) friendly to a newbie?

It seems to me that learning limit may improve my no limit game as it seems far more technical so it may force me to develop better habits.

good questions, scrimmage. and, you came to the right place for a nicely biased answer...lol.

i, too, started with NL. but, i just like limit better. can you earn more playing NL? probably. but, i also want to enjoy the game, and i do NOT enjoy sitting around waiting for set over set or AA vs KK to get paid. to me, that is largely what the NL games these days have turned into.

and, fish get chewed up so retardedly quick it's almost not worth sitting on a table when you see one there.

in limit, the game is much more complex, imo. it isn't power poker anymore. and, its not a bluffy game to where you can simply blow a nit off the pot. that isnt, however, to say that there isnt a bluffing element in the game. on the contrary, there is a BIG one. but, the bluffs are often semi-bluffs with outs to back you up. lhe requires you to look at both the odds you are taking as well as laying. more so than NL because you cant really deny someone the odds to draw once the pot gets to a certain size.....all you can do is continue to charge them for it knowing that you will hold up most times.

blind stealing AND, more importantly, blind defense become huge contributers to your winrate. cbetting is often mandatory because of the odds you are receiving from the pot just on the off chance you will pick it up. and, the c/r is much more common down here.

in essence, lhe will definitely improve your NL game. it will force you to become better in several situations of NL that dont get exercised enough.

as for fish, yes, there are plenty to go around....at all stakes. why? because there just isnt as much buzz around the fixed limit games anymore. try to find videos, articles, or general forum traffic when it comes to limit games and you will see the difference. therefore, the fish are at a much larger disadvantage, imo, to someone who really understands the game and its nuances. and, when you see those fish, you have a much better shot at them because they will bleed off their money slower....giving you a better chance at catching some of it as it falls out of their pockets.

one other thing to consider, you can play higher stakes with a lower bankroll, too. how? boy, i'm glad you asked.

first, can we safely assume that winning at a 2BB(ptbb)/100 is a decent winrate when we get to 100NL and beyond? if so, compare the bankrolls for the same big bets in the stakes you want to play.

100NL is a $2 big bet (ptbb). but, to play 100NL, you need around a $2500 roll, minimum, and most will tell you these days to play 6max, it needs to be closer to $5k (50 BIs).

however, to play $1/$2 limit games, you need between 300 and 500 BBs. so, between $600 and $1000 and you are pretty much good to go, conventionally speaking.

you tell me which you will hit faster......if both games are winning at a 2 for you.

to summarize, i think you would do yourself a favor to play some limit games. you will become a better hand reader/range assessor. you will learn the subtleties of odds, both implied and straight pot, and you will learn blind defense. those are the bigger three advantages i can think of.

and, all on a smaller roll with more fish. dunno how you beat that.

I came across a website guide to low limit holdem @ www.lowlimitholdem.com

Anyone know if this info is any good? It is geared towards very loose tables, so probably more for brick and mortar I'm assuming, or are online low stakes limit games 'no foldem holdem' often?

Anyone know any good websites for limit? FTR seems to have a limited number of articles on limit, not that they aren't good articles. I'm also planning on borrowing a book on low stakes limit that comes recommended from a friend. I've read HOH, but of course it is geared towards NL.

look up Small Stakes Hold'Em by Sklansky/Malmuth/Miller. its the bible. then, go to Hold'Em for Advanced Players by the same guys. then, proceed to Winning Tough Hold'Em Games by Zobags.

That ought to get you up to speed. i have read each book no less than a dozen times. and, i still learn/remember stuff when i pick them up again.

as for sites, here is always what i will recommend. although there will be more traffic at some others.....like the publishers of the first two book recommendations.

if i were you, and you are SERIOUS about learning/adding limit games, you should play some and put some hands in here. that is, BY FAR, the fastest way you will pick things up.
