I thought about raising from the SB, but thought I might just create a bigger pot for everyone to chase after, since only the BB might fold to my raise.
Should I have raised just to knock out the BB?
And would the answer change if I was in the BB instead?

Raise and hope the BB calls. Your edge here is too good and your opponents will still give you too much action post-flop.
There probably is a mindset thing here.
In NL Tournies you want your opponents to generally fold unless you have a big edge. In NL cash, the (reverse) implied odds tend to favor pushing people out. In cash limit, they can call me all day when I have the best of it.

Okay, what hands have enough of a pot equity edge that I should do this from the SB or BB?
If there's a sticky or something I should be reading, please point me that way.

From the SB my range of raising hands is fairly narrow. AA, KK, QQ, AKs are raises, reraises, and caps.
JJ and TT are raisable at times.. I often take the limp and see a flop first, however. Depends on how many people are already in the pot and who is in the pot.

Assume 3+ other players in the pot.
Pick your list
Fishy B&M wisdom:
Never raise, check your BB without looking.
Pure Value because my opponents don't know any better:
QQ maybe JJ
More aggressive value. Willing to check sometimes with AK when it misses.
JJ/AK/AQs
Really aggressive value with some balancing so they can't put me on AK or a big pair when I raise out of the blinds.
TT/AQ/ATs/KJs/QJs
