Ok, I am not meaning this post to anger people, or to be an idiot, but the responses to the topic I created brought on new thoughts.

Firstly, I wasn't considering writing a program to play poker for me all day long. It was more of an idea to improve my skills in two things I enjoy doing in life (programming and playing poker). Also, I need to complete an 'honors project' to get my degree. So I thought this would be something that tied together two hobbies.

Also, I never intended to use the program to achieve mass financial gain, as I would much rather be playing poker rather than watching something else play it.

But anyway, I was just wondering what would be so wrong with a person developing a program that tells them what play to make. In making the program, the person would have to know how to play at least equally as well as the program. It can just compute things much quicker.

Basically, it is using logic designed by the creator, and any other information that is available to any person willing to look for it (e.g. hand histories).

So how can it really be viewed as cheating or unethical, when really all it is doing is making the decisions that you tell it to make.

I suppose the argument could be made against it, simply because it can make split second decisions, calculate the math ridiculously fast, and never have an emotion effect its play.

So, Ill leave it at that. And again, I am not meaning to go above the rules and to make everybody mad. I won't bring it up again. Although I plan on sticking around to develop my game more, as I owe most of my (limited) success to this site.

Also, I forgot, to whomever said that it would not play good poker, I disagree. I'll leave it at that.

P.S. please don't ban me, I just feel the topic (ethics and whatnot) should be discussed. If you really do disagree, please delete this post and I'll forget about it.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention, I didn't know that bots were a big problem in poker. I didn't think many people would really want to put the time or effort into making a good one.

KoRnholio will become famous soon enough
Programs that aide the player more than Pokertracker+Heads up display of data from PT are usually not allowed on any poker sites.

There has been a lot of debate about bots (feasibility, ability, etc) but in general I think they are bad for the online poker community just from the fact that they will scare new players away. And not because it will take all their money (I doubt it would do better than any other solid player), but because the scared new players will think that they are being cheated or have no chance against the computer AI.

That being said, I did run across an advertisement today for a promotion on Pokershare's website that read as follows:

Quote:
PokerShare is bringing the sexy back with its latest addition - the PlayMate!

Always on hand, always ready and always turned on, the PokerShare PlayMate gives its user an edge they could previously have only dreamed about. Best of all, it's exclusive to PokerShare players.

No longer do players have to rack their brains calculating pot odds, keeping a consistant notebook on each person at the table because the gorgeous PokerShare PlayMate has it all in front of them! Instantly she provides:

* Real-time notes on playing style and betting habits
* The likelihood of winning a hand
* Pot and Hand Odds
* Progressive Table and Player Profiling
* Playing Style Analysis
* Hand History
* Strategy Optimization
* Hand Probability
* AND OH SO MUCH MORE!
You might want to check into that, since it seems to be more along the lines of what you were thinking for your project.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

If you have a problem with a thread we have locked, either PM the moderator (that's me) to discuss it directly, or PM the head of all moderators, Xianti. He's on vacation, so you probably won't get a hold of him.

However, don't post more topics.
