When playing in B&M casinos with jackpots, does that affect how any of you play hands?

I play 4/8 at a B&M with Monte Carlo-style jackpots (quads and better pay off). So, last weekend I'm playing, and the table is pretty passive; pre-flop raises are rare, and there hasn't been a pre-flop re-raise all night.

In late position (one from the CO) I get dealt 9-9. UTG+1 raises, and of course I'll call. Except that the guy directly to my right re-raises, and the guy can play a little. Hmmmm. OK, so I'm up against at least A-K, and then probably pocket queens or better to the re-raiser. I think about it for a minute, and then fold.

The flop comes, what else, 9-rag-9. Sure enough, I was up against A-K, and pocket jacks (not the queens or better I thought, but I can't blame the guy for re-raising with jacks, trying to chase out rag aces and kings). The quad 9s would have won me over $300, plus, I don't know, about 10-15 BBs in the pot.

Obviously, when you're playing pocket pair against pocket overpair, you're a massive dog. That said, if there's a jackpot involved, does that change how you play? My instincts say no, unless it's a REAL biggie ($1K plus, for something like a wild draw to a royal flush). I must say, I later called a capped pot pre-flop with the 9s again a couple of hours later (the ONLY OTHER pot all night where there were multiple raises pre-flop), and, of course, saw nothing and had to throw them away post-flop. So I lost two BBs to a hand I KNEW was dominated pre-flop, just trying to make up for my earlier fold.

Personally, I don't pay a lick of attention to the bad beat jackpot or the high hand jackpot. Some people will play any pocket pair from any position even against raises because of it. Like you said, you were pretty sure you were beat so you made the correct lay down. If you play any pocket pair with the jackpot in mind it's just going to cost you money in the long run. Personally, I'd rather not play for the bad beat or high hand because of the extra rake they take every hand, but you can never convince the rest of the people at the table because most of them are fanatic about winning the 40K bad beat jackpot. You can't explain to them that the extra dollar they take out of every pot they win will likely add up to more than they'll ever win from the high hand or bad beat. Because of this I just view these jackpots as a "bonus" although they really aren't. I play my normal game and if I get a qualifying high hand then awesome.

My advice is to never pay any attention to the jackpots while playing hold em. They come in so seldom that it'll cost you a lot more money than it makes you if you play for them. Now, if you are playing omaha on Interpoker/Carribean Sun it's a different matter. I've hit 2 royal Flush jackpots and 2 Badbeat jackpots on Interpoker Omaha, so it might very well be worthwhile to play a few more hands preflop than you really should(though almost everybody does this anyway with Omaha).

It's a scam to collect more rake
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

You'll go insane if you wonder what COULD have happened. Don't make -EV plays just because theres a chance you could make four of a kind.
