What factors do you guys use in determining whether you bet the river when checked to or take the cheap showdown? I don't miss a lot of bets here, but think I could be picking up a few more. I feel a review of a SSH chapter coming...

Bet if you think there is a chance you will be called by a worse hand.
Often you wind up in a situation where a worse hand would fold and a better hand would raise (or check raise). In That situation you would opt for the cheap showdown.

I find myslef (often from the blinds) checking the river with TP weak Kicker. Especially when there is more than one other player at SD.

Easy bet 9 times out of 10. Just close your eyes and bet. Fold to a raise sometimes.

I guess the rule of thumb is if you would call a bet on the river, then you bet out...two ways to win and all that.
Then if you get raised on what looks like a standard draw that hit and/or by a tight/passive, fold it.
I've been amazed how many people will call down with second/third pair here just out of curiousity.

Doesn't SSH hold 'em say to check-behind if you are unsure if you have the best hand. If you have TP with say a 9 or T Kicker with no draws, shouldn't I check this? I'm definitely going to do some studying on river play today or tomorrow.

Sorry...I misread your post. I was talking about betting/checking when you have to act first.
I think...get ready..."it depends".
If you are behind, it depends on the player and the earlier action (e.g., pre-flop raise).
