I've taken a stab at some Omaha high / low also. I'm just beginning to start playing. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not great, but I'm getting by and I can usually hold my own.

Mostly in PL $.05 / $.10 ring games or something of similar stakes.

Last night I got very frusterated. I'd have a good hand, double suited, 4 to a straight, 2 pair, something like that. I wouldn't pull off a good high hand, but I'd have the nut low hand. I'd call it all the way down only to the river only to split the low hand, lose the high hand and I wouldn't get enough out of the pot to cover what I put in. Aaarrrggg.

Um did anyone else notice that fnord had a full house 8's full of jack on that last hand? only registered as three of a kind. What a rip off.

Now with more Evil and a side of Hatred

You need to use at least two of your hole cards in Omaha, so the best hand he could make was 3 8's.

Haha, ironically I also don't think like this game much, and I just joined a Omaha high/low tourney as well. I admit that I'm not that good at this at all though.

I think I can hold my own at Omaha high, though. I have won a MTT of that once, in one of the few Omaha high tournies I've been in. But with high / low, its different. Don't know when to chase a low card, don't know when to stay with a mediocre high or low hand in case of winning half of the pot, don't know exactly how good a preflop hand is, etc.

Omaha high is a lot closer to Holdem.

How can you hate Omaha hi/lo???????????

Besides stud8, this game offers the greatest preflop advantage of any limit game I know in terms of lots of players wanting to see the flop with junk (Pl and Nl are a different story). You can really hammer on weak players from later positions and build HUGE pots. "Schooling" doesn't work because most flops are going to be unforgiving to at least 2-3 of the limpers who think they're pot committed because you raised preflop to make a huge pot. In holdem, schooling helps the fish, but in Omaha8 it's a good player's savior god.

Btw, try and loosen up in the earlier hands when the blinds are low.

Omaha hi low is messy on the internet but when i play it in my home games it is often the best game, we play it slightly differently though.

There is no qualifying for the low but at the end you have to secretly declare whether you're going high, low or both ways, if you try to go both ways you have to win both to get any money

It works well and is usually generates the largest pots, i'm not sure whether having a qualifying rank is good or not, it stops you hammering you A23 deals the whole way but i think it takes some of the fun out of it.

The thing I love about Omaha is the size of the pots and the lack of expertise from the people who play it. If you just wait until you get the nuts, you almost always get paid off big. There are so many draws going all the time that people just can't throw their hands away.

I've spent a little time reading about Omaha, and any literature you can find stresses the importance of starting hand selection. Everybody who plays Hold 'Em seriously realizes this, of course, but few execute it at the Omaha table. Great starting hands in Omaha have to "cooperate".

For example, Fnords first starting hand (that he played) was 6h 5c As 4c. This is playable, but not a strong hand. To be a good starting hand, the A needs to be suited with one of the others - you gotta have the nut flush draw to play this hand. Its a decent hand, because there's a good chance of hitting the small straight and winning both high and low. But if low cards come, its so easy to get counterfeited. You basically need to see a 2 and 3 for this hand to pay both ways (which is what hi-lo is all about), because you can bet there is somebody out there with one or the other. When the 4 comes, it takes away your best chance at low (because everyone else has a four now too).

Don't give up on Omaha just because its different. There is alot of money to be made by someone who puts as much effort into this game as they do Hold 'em.

Personally, I prefer just Omaha, ie sans the hi-lo split. Its a little closer to Hold 'em, in that the starting hands you are looking for are similar. A great starting hand is something like AsAcKsQc. Two nut flush draws, 3 nut straight draws (AK,AQ, KQ) and best full house potential. This is basically AsKs, AcQc, AA, KQ all in one hand. Easy to recognize as a powerhouse, and reasonably easy to figure value based on odds, like you might do in hold 'em.

But don't put a lot of value on AsKs8s3c. You're basically playing one good starting two card hand (AKs) against somebody who has two or three good ones.

Try it, there are very few rocks playing Omaha, and so many family pot players it hardly matters anyway.

I personally love omaha, like heatman stated, if you develop the correct eye for starting hands, you can, and will take down huge pots.
Folding in omaha hi/lo is like fish folding on empire (doesn't happen).

In home games, you usually put chips in your hand secretly.
Player 1 puts chips in his hand. 1 chip means high, 2 means low, 3 means both.

Then player 2 announces his hand (high, low or both), then player 1 shows how many chips he holds.

A pair of aces isn't as strong in Omaha as they are in holdem. But you do make a good point. I'd play this hand from any position.

Especially in your position (You were button with a good stack) why did you fold this, 5h Ac Ad Jd? This is a playable hand.
