I never really planned on buying poker books because I figured I wouldn't learn enough to justify their cost, but I had a gift card for a book store so I went and bought one.

I was surpised to see that the store had quite a selection of "gambling" books. A lot of books on nearly unbeatable games like blackjack, craps and video poker, which kind of made me laugh. There were probably about 50 different books on holdem alone. There's only 2 books I've really ever considered buying and they are sklansky's small stakes holdem and harrington on holdem. Since I kind of put my NL tournement play on hold, I picked up small stakes holdem. Also, the bookstore didn't have harrington on holdem anyway.

I don't know how much this book will help, but I figure it's better than a couple of paperback fiction books that I would never read.

So realistically what should I expect out of this book? I've heard a wide range of ideas when it comes to poker books. Some say they're a waste of time and others say you shouldn't even be playing poker if you haven't read small stakes holdem.

There are a lot of poker books that aren't worth the money. SSH is definitely not one of them. Anyone who says it is not worth the money, didn't take the time to read the damn thing.

I would doubt that there is anybody on FTR who could honestly say that SSH did nothing for them. There is too much information in there to not come away with something.

I think this is the best first book you could buy.

What should you expect from this book? It depends on how much you study it. If you read it once and never crack it again, you are missing out. I learned the most from it the second and third times I read it. The first time through is almost information overload.

If you study the concepts in the book, you should expect this book to pay for itself many times over.

This book is the reason I have turned 50 bucks into over 2500 in the last four months playing three nights a week. And I'm only playing .5/1.

Sklansky could probably offer a "this book will pay for itself, or i will buy it back guarantee", and never have to ever buy a single copy back.

If it were not for this book, I would have hung it up a long time ago out of frustration from having to reload and never knowing what I was not doing right.

Well I've found that it's very interesting to be reading about poker, so it's not hard to read at all. Long books tend to bore me very quickly, but this is not the case here.

I haven't read the whole book yet so I'll save my comments until then. I'm just comparing it to my learning experiences on FTR. There is no doubt that up until this point, just about everything I've learned about poker has come from FTR.

I'm sure this book will be able to teach me some more.

I'd say the best thing I've learned is that I want to be playing against bad players. I used to fall into the mindset that I want people to fold to my bets when I have top pair, so I need to be playing against good players. I think the book calls this thinking "absurd."

nah...WLLH by Jones is still hands down the best 1st book for the limit player. SSH takes it to the next level. WLLH gives you a solid foundation to read and apply SSH.

I would say for most people this is probably true. I think that most people who have exposure to FTR and the concepts talked about here, however, should have a good enough grasp on the game to be able to forego purchasing WLLH.

The biggest danger for a new player after reading SSH would be to misapply some of the strategies in it without that foundation that WLLH gives you, but an avid reader of the forum probably already has much of this this foundation in place.

In ROI terms, you can't go wrong with SSH.

This has become even more true as I moved up to .5/1 No more huge pots because someone called down when I had a made hand.

SSH and WLLH are both great books. Any low LHE player should own a copy of at least one, preferably both. Most people praise SSH, and it's a great book, but as hyper said, WLLH is an awesome book too. Most people tend to over look it though. It just came out in it's 3rd edition which gives you all the more reason to check it out.
