Good on you m8...!!

Poker isn't going anywhere and if it is, then it is pretty nice to have another job.

Make sure and check out the Middle limit games at the Commerce.

You gonna hook us up with some video game deals?
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

Lots of reasons.

Income is one, I made some pretty good money, but not as much as I did when I was a developer. It's also harder to move up when poker is your paycheck.

Another thought is that the longer I stay out the industry, the harder it would be to get back in at the same level.

Part of me really wants to move to Cali. I was seriously looking at Nevada anyway, but moving is really expensive when you're footing the bill. Although it could be a lot worse, I really wanted to get into a more poker-friendly location.

Finally, it's a hell of an oportunity. I'm going to be back in a small team, an environment similar to the one at Microsoft where I moved up really really fast.

I haven't really "worked" a whole lot in my life (the last 2-3 years at MS were the least I've liked a job in a long time.) I hope to "work" a lot less in the future.

I was in a phase of my life where I was looking for something, hopefully I found it.

I'd love to work for Blizzard, that's not anywhere near what I'm studying for though.

I'm sure working for Blizzard and playing poker part-time will provide a healthy income.

Perhaps a boring question but I'm gonna ask how many hands you played a week and how hard it was to fight burnout.

In a couple of months poker will be my primary source of income, not really going pro just taking a year out. Anyway I want to know how hard it's going to be to play poker for several hours most days.

Good luck in the new job BTW.

I graduated from college about 2 months ago and decided to play poker full time for 6 months to a year before trying to find a job. I have been playing about 10,000 hands/week playing 4-tables of 3/6 ring with maybe another 1000 hands per week 2-tabling 5/10 6-max and haven't suffered any burnout yet. In fact at the rate it's been going, I'm having a difficult time convincing myself that I should go out and look for a real job at all.

Seems like a reasonable choice to me!
Good oportunities don't knock on your door every day.
Hope everything works good for you in this "new" career.

10k hands 4 tabling must be about 40 or more hours, that sounds a bit extreme. My original plan was to play 10k hands of 3/6 a week but playing 6-8 tables provided I can find enough good games.

I'm very sure I'd suffer some serious burnout playing for as long as you play.

I have found 10K hands 4-tabling to only be between 30-35 hours/week. Be careful if you move up to 8 tables at a time during workday hours. I tried 6 tables at a time for a while when I first started and had my worst downswing ever. It might have just been a coincidence, but I think playing that many tables at once for long periods of time was too much for me to be able to keep playing at my normal level. I have been doing very well at 4-tables since reverting back though.

Well I've been playing 4 tables for ages now and I now get bored easily waiting for a new decision so I think it might become easier to do if I play more tables. I'll probably be playing anywhere within the period 9pm-4am which is 4pm-11pm EST so the games should be fairly good.

Anyway, good luck.

For those that don't know, I used to work for Xbox Live. I was there pretty close to the start of Software development as the 5th or so Engineer put on the project. Well before Xbox shipped.

What did you say Fnord when they asked you what you've been doing the last 3-4 months instead of at Microsoft? I'm curious how you brought your professional poker career into the interview.

Check out my videos at Grinderschool.com

I just said it. Given that I was mostly talking to game companies I wasn't around many of the kind of people that would hold it against me.

A guy I play home games with just started working at Blizzard. He is working on World of Warcraft as a "Game Master". So if you meet someone named Nicolai who likes to pretend he is Russian, invite him out for some easy money.
