You hold Ax on the button. Folded to you, you raise. Small blind folds. Big blind calls.

Flop is A99

Villain checks to you, and you bet. He calls. Turn is anything other than an A, and villain checks to you again. What do you do?

I check through almost every time, praying that villain stabs at the river with whatever crap he holds. If he has me beat, I save a bet. If I have him beat, I often get an extra bet where I wouldn't previously -- if I had bet the turn villain would probably fold.

Am I missing bets?

What about on boards that are two-suited? Or boards like AJJ where villain could have some outs to beat us anyway?

I like to play it basically the same way, depending on my opponent.

My goal isn't really to avoid getting check-raised. The chance of someone hitting a paired board with a random hand is less than 10% and the chance of them deciding to check-call, check-raise with it is even less than that. It's not really worth worrying about.

What I don't want is for them to fold. So, if I have aces or kings (pocket or otherwise) in late position and get my c-bet gets called, I'll usually check the turn to get them to bluff at it.

The exception is on a co-ordinated board. If there's a couple flush or straight draws out there on the turn, I'll bet again, hoping the villain picked one up. In that case, I'm worried the opponent will fold on the river rather than the turn.

If this situation was changed so that it wasn't button/BB in a blind steal situation, I'd like your line a lot more. As is though, you are definately missing bets vs the idiots that think everybody who ever raised from the button was on a pure steal(most people).

I think it depends on your kicker too. If your kicker is more likely to play I'm definately betting. HOWEVER, many idiots will chose to check/raise the turn with air on a blind defense so I'm just going to call anyway. I think you could potentially miss up to 2 BB here a lot of the times.
