Against an unknown. I think I should've led the flop.

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (5 handed) pokerhand.org hand converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with 4, 4.
3 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) 4, 7, 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (3 BB) 9 (2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks.

River: (3 BB) Q (2 players)
Hero bets, BB folds.

Final Pot: 4 BB

lead the flop, against any player.

If you would have led the flop if you missed you CAN NOT check when you hit, no matter how strong.

The only exception to this, is when you miss, you should sometimes check, if you might get a free card from someone afraid you are slowplaying.
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

My rule of thumb is if I raised preflop and I hit a monster, I am going to bet every single time no matter who my opponent is or how many opponents I have. You are expected to bet the flop when you raised preflop, so people start to actually think about what you might have if you check. Hand plays completely different after you bet the flop.
