The other night I was playing 3/6 on PS and was doing very well +50BB and came across a maniac type player. After the hand I will show you, I tilted for a bit and lost my +50 and most of my buy in.

Had a smoke, came back and played him solid for a few hours to get alot of it back except for around 10BB before he logged off.

The hand:
PokerStars 3/6 Hold'em (6 handed) converter

Preflop: KewlKatt is BB with Jd, Jh.
UTG folds, MP folds, CO folds, Button folds, SB (Maniac) completes, KewlKatt raises, SB (Maniac) 3-bets, KewlKatt caps, SB (Maniac) calls.

Flop: (8.33 SB) As, 2h, Jc (2 players)
Maniac bets, KewlKatt raises, Maniac calls.

Turn: (6.16 BB) 9h (2 players)
Maniac bets, KewlKatt raises, Maniac calls.

River: (10.16 BB) Qh (2 players)
Maniac checks, KewlKatt bets, Maniac raises, KewlKatt 3-bets, Maniac caps, KewlKatt calls.

Final Pot: 18.16 BB

Results in white below:
Maniac has 3h 7h (flush, queen high).
KewlKatt has Jd Jh (three of a kind, jacks).
Outcome: Maniac wins 18.16 BB.

Was this just blind luck he hit his hand, or is there a method to his madness. I went on to see this guy beat other favorite hands large by 3 betting preflop, flop, before pairing up 2 on the turn, and trips on the river with a 92o.

Is this a player that should be avoided... or fished?

I think you answered your own question. If you play solid poker, and you know he's a maniac, you're in good shape. He just got lucky on that hand. You can't let that set you off. I don't think there's anyone here who wouldn't have played that the same way as you did. Sometimes you can even use them to your advantage when you raise them to help chase out drawing hands. I think you always have an advantage against anyone if you know how they play.

This is just what I think. I like playing with people like that. I remember people saying that if you can make 3-5 bb/100 hands overall that's pretty decent. Players like that will genrate big swings, but the swings overall should end up in your favor if you're playing solid.

I think if I were you, I'd stick him on my buddy list and make up the rest, and then some, against him tonight.

i HATE having premium hands like this in the BB. you raise for value knowing that no one is going to fold, which only gives them better odds to draw out on you (not that this guy did, he just got lucky).

was playing against a maniac in a live casino, and she would raise any two cards pre flop, even 62o. what this did was build the pot enough that she could chase any kind of wacky draw on the flop. and she would hit a lot of them. i know there was a ton of luck involved but like the original poster, i began to wonder if there was a method to her madness. because she was winning a hell of a lot of pots and cracking premium hands left and right.

one piece of advice i read is to check-call a maniac to the river with a good hand, and absolutely never try to bluff with a lousy hand, since she will never fold and may amplify your pain when she sucks out that bizarre 2pr on you. but generally i like to check-raise them when i have top pair, as you can always count on them to fire away with bottom pair or any small pocket pair. just grit your teeth and call them down if they re-raise, because they will do it to you all the way to the river. never fold top pair against a maniac no matter how much they raise. learned that the hard way myself.
