I just played a $5+1 sng NL Texas hold'em game over at Empire and won second place. I thought I'd raise the stakes and go to a $10+1 table.

Imagine my surprise when I was dealt 4 cards. 'This isn't hold'em!' I thought to myself...swiftly followed by a few swear words.

I stuck myself on 'fold' for a while and ran to google so I could find the rules for Omaha Hi/Lo so I could actually put up a decent fight.

An hour later and I walk away with the $50 first prize.

I found a site with a few start hands that you should play, and played my first hand about 5 games in with A355. I won that and was chip leader...which I remained to be throughout the whole thing. I think I knocked 7 of the other people out.

Now, either I've found a game that I am genuinely good at...or else this was beginners luck. Surely I shouldn't be able to walk into a game of Omaha Hi/Lo and walk away the winner without having played it before?

I decided to tempt fate and go in for another one at $10+1.

finished 1st with another $50 prize.

This is odd - but I think I might go and have another go at it whilst I'm hitting the lucky streak.

With just basic knowledge you can be a winner at low stakes omaha hi/lo.
The shot at winning half the pot gives people an excuse to play too many hands.
Congrulation on your success, hope it continues.

thank ye.

My success was short lived.

I have had 5 games in total - all SnGs of either $10 or $5. The first two I won, as mentioned above. Then I started to understand what I was doing...and what hands I needed...and what starting hands are good to play with in order to get a decent set.

It's at this point that I lost big time - I went out within the first 3 people for each of the last three games.

I think I will take the $100 winnings as a good sign of beginners luck and can't see me playing Omaha much anymore.

IMO omaha is much easier than holdem to play at the lower limits. i can't speak for high limits omaha because i don't know enough about omaha to know how it's like at high limits.

but i do know that at low limits people will call with anything. a single A or K, anything connectors, any suited, they all play. it's not uncommon to have 80% seeing the flop on average.

the single most important adjustment for omaha is you CANNOT play one good hand. people see AKxx, and they start raising the crap out of it. if it was AK95, your hand is pretty useless. it doesn't have a good chance winning the low, and doesn't have a good chance winning high either. if you are a loose player you would play this if the ace were suited, otherwise you must muck it.

playing Kxs is dangerous because it's not the nuts. you can get away with this most of the time in holdem, you cannot and will not get away with it in omaha. if you don't have the nuts, someone else does.

with that said, after the flop is the most crucial point. fit or fold strategy works very well in omaha. in holdem you can use aggression to drive out weaker hands or even better than your marginal made hand. in omaha all you're gonna get is people calling your raises cold...because they have the nuts, or drawing to them.

with that said, only continue past the flop if you hold a monster or drawing to the nuts. TPTK is worthless in omaha.

for hi/lo you should always play to scoop the pot. never play for half. that's why AK95 is a crap hand. you can only win with a flop like AKK, or flopping the nut straight. that's 2 hands you will win with. 95 is crap because it makes small straights that are easily owned by bigger straights.

i'm rambling :P

summary: play and draw to the nuts. fold everything else.
