i think this would be a neat experiment. how do you think you would play, if you went into a ring game with a big bankroll (so you don't go bust after a couple bad beats or a run of cold cards). and then you cover up the numbers under your name. so you do NOT know how much money you have?

say it's a 1/2 game. you can get your friend to sit in for you, with around 80 to 120, which he doesn't tell you. then he takes tape or something and covers up the numbers under your name.

now you sit down, and play your usual game.

I think that is actually a pretty good idea that I might try sometime soon. Though I think I probably would play exactly the same way since my stack size is usually a non-factor in limit games. Definately might help keep me from going on tilt though.

This is a great idea. I'm going to try this tonight. I find myself in the habit of checking my stack after EVERY single hand that I play. What does my stack size have to do with the game or the play of the hands? Not a damn thing!

Thanks for this outstanding suggestion. I'm going to tape my monitor up tonight and try it when I get home.

good idea. last time i went to atlantic city, a lady advised my friend to do the same thing by keeping all his chips in a big messy pile instead of in neat stacks. if you don't know whether you're up or down for the session, it forces you to play tight.

according to mike caro, the people that stack their chips nicely tend to play tight, and the people with chips all messy tend to play loose.

The pro that I play with advised me the same thing. I had always kept my chips in 10 chip piles separated by denomination and he suggested not doing that so that I wasn't worried about how much I had (or didn't have).

One aspect of the game I am quite good at is reading people. I've found that Caro generalizes a bit; his straightforward ideas are meant to apply more to weaker players. A better way to think about how a player's chips are arranged is, "what does that messy stack, in conjunction with what else I've observed, tell me about that particular player?"

if someone reads caro's book and comes to my table thinking, "hey that guy with the messy pile must be a big fish, he can't possibly have the nuts he's representing, i better call him down with 2nd pair"... well, he's going to be in for a surprise!
