When the SB checked and then very quickly called my pot bet on the flop, the only hand he can really have here is 4xxx/74xx or 77xx. There's a very slight chance that he has AAxx-QQxx and is looking to spike a 2 outer, but very few people do this out of position heads up.

I am overjoyed at his call (hoping he has 74xx or hits his kicker on the turn0), and then the dreaded 4 hits and he checks very quickly again. If I bet here AA/KK might call again, but I am90% sure he has quads, so I check.

River he comes out for a pot bet almost instantly. I've found this to be a pretty reliable tell showing strength. Often people will check a made flush/boat/straight on the turn, and when the opponent checks behind the turn, they fire quickly on the river to make it look like a desperate bluff.

I just can't see myself beating anything here. AA/KK might bet a small amount, but there's no way he is making a full pot bet on the end out of position when it is very likely that I have the quads myself. I figure the only way he can make this bet is if he knows where the nuts are. What do you guys think?

Well I don't have any big story about how he showed a genius bluff or anything, but chat went something like this:

Me: I know you have the 4
(I fold)
Him: perhaps, perhaps not
Him: I had KK actually, I would have shown it but I have auto-muck on
Me: Sure you did...

I'm not quite sure I know what you mean by this. Sometimes a fast check can mean they are on a draw and haven't improved (from Mike Caro's book I believe).

I suppose he could have been on some kind of flush/straight draw. Maybe he had 556x and thought he could get value out of my 4xxx type hands on the river?

I instant check at least nightly when I hit a well disguised big hand. Example would be when I play a draw very fast on the flop with a RR and actually hit, especially OOP - which is when I pay my draws the fast most often. I hit my st8 or nut flush out, put the instant check in. I think it helps that i'm medium-to-passive post flop (you have to be six tabling) because people will often put me on the trips, and come bluffing to steal the pot. Unless you are very deep, you get most of a persons stack this way even if they B/F.

FWIW, instant checking can be a good play in the right circumstances.
