To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

I don't understand this river call. You have nothing. Almost certainly his raise on the flop was a free card attempt. He either has overcards, flush draw, wheel draw or a midpair. All of which beat you.

This is probably the worst played river I've ever seen posted here.
Lead the river.

I'd fold preflop. I assume the small blind is .10. But, given you called, a flop raise is a good option. Calling the river is the worst call I have ever seen. I was about to say worst play, but I have seen worse plays ... many times someone has failed to raise with the nuts last to act on the river. And in a live game once, I saw someone fold and turn over AA to one bet on the river with a 12BB pot and 3 jacks on the board.

You can't possibly win that by calling, raise it if you think he's bluffing

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Let me guess, your mouse slipped and you clicked the wrong button. Please tell me that's what happened.
I did that on a hand, and folded JJ to a measely flop bet. Thankfully, it was the right choice when all was said and done, but yeah.

The villain liked to limp with suited connectors in late position. He always raised aces, high cards and pairs to steal blinds. He was a huge multi-tabler, so I'd played over 1500 hands against him and he'd been sitting behind me for a couple hours at this point. I figured he must have a suited connector. He simply didn't limp with anything else that I'd seen.
I put him on a draw. I knew he didn't have the 67 of hearts or below, since I had those. I didn't believe he had the eight or jack, since he would have bet the turn. So, he either had T9 of hearts, or 54 of diamonds, spades or clubs. I checked to induce a bluff.
He had 54 of diamonds.
In retrospect, I should have check-raised here, just in case he has the T9 of hearts, but I didn't think of that at the time.

No matter how good your read is, you can't narrow it down that far. There is only one holding you beat ... 45. He could just as easily had A4 or A5. A bet or check raise may be reasonable, but nothing can justify calling there. It just isn't possible to narrow someone's holding down that far.

I like it, if only to f with his head. Even if you're right 1 in 20 times there might be enough shania here. At least your heart is in the right place.
Great hand, amazing even.

That's a fine line between f'ing with his head and giving him free money.
I imagine the post hand conversation was similiar to Fnord's avatar...

I didn't vote as it didn't have 'idiot' in field . Anyway, I didn't want to say anything until after you posted the results as I somehow knew you probably had won the pot.
You cant discount other possibilities in this hand, like weak J9s or JT or QJ that would routinely take a free card against known aggressive opponents in this situation, if only to initiate a bluff from you on the river. Also, A3s, A4s, A5s, etc etc would all play this the same way. I could MAYBE defend betting this river, but any other play is spewage (including check/raising)
