Ok lets say you have pocket 8s utg+2 at a loose table. You feel confident that if you raise you will get little respect but if you limp you will get multiple limpers behind you. Yes someone might even raise. Anyway thats not really my question. Now the flop comes jj9. We are first 2 act and have 4 limpers acting behind us. With that many limpers shouldn't we assume that atleast 1 has a jack or 9 and just give up on the hand? I know that sound weak but is there really any point in beting when you are most likely way behind. Also is our equity anywhere near high enough to call bets.

88, on a flop of JJ9 out of position against 4 opponents is not good. Your opponents may or may not have a J or a 9 but you also have to consider the odds that an A, K, Q or T may fall on the turn or river (> 50%). So even if you are ahead on the flop you will often be outdrawn.

agreed, sinky.
no set, no bet. limit is different than no limit with the pairs. especially, 22-77 ish. you need multiple callers...more than in NL. you just dont get the opportunity to punish players when you hit your set.
if i am oop, i like to open-limp here...to entice more callers. and if it goes around and gets raised late...i dont mind calling the raise at all. but when the board misses you, you are done. dont throw good money after bad.
the math is a 2-outer...for you...and you could be up against a 9, anyway. 2 outs is about 5% on your next card...meaning, you need 20:1 to call...into a situation you may very well be dead in before you hit your card.
just not a good flop texture...this hand. and bad odds, to boot.

LHE is a game where your skill keeps you breakeven until you hit your rush of random BS.
Nothing beats flopping quads while dropping a duece!

Yeah at a loose table I almost always limp the middle pairs in the early positions. Especially out of position, it's to your benefit to keep the pot small and let everyone in to get the most out of flopping a set.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Yeah. Middle pairs 77, 88, and 99, are all limpfodder for me out of early position and even middle position I'll only raise AA-99.
In fact, I'm not a fan of raising any pocket pairs lower than 99. I have been known to do it from the button, especially if I feel like I've missed a gajillion sets in a row, and "this one just has to hit!"

You really need to stop doing this. It's not a good mindset for a poker player.

Maybe a bad mindset. Not a bad play.

You're right. I know better. I was just making a point, while trying to be a little humorous. Sometimes I like to play my pairs more aggresively out of the back, regaurdless of what I say to myself while I'm throwing my money in the middle.
