No monster pots or bad beats or good beat here. Just wanted to share a nice 2 hour session I had at the .25/.50 limit games at Poker Stars today.

I've been reading a lot of the advice in the limit section for quite awhile now and knew that I was being much too passive in my approach to the game, but had to have it hammered into my head by Fnord, Mike and others. It is a slow learning process, but I think I had a revelation while playing today. I generally use .05/.10 and .25/.50 limit games as proving grounds when trying to incorporate new styles and techniques so my bankroll doesn't get drained.

277 hands
VP$IP - 17.69%
VP$IP SB - 21.62%
WWSF - 29.49%
W$@SD - 56.5 %
PFR - 10.83%
Total Agg - 1.27
Amount won: 18.00 (13.00 BB/100)

This was a totally new approach for me, and it was very refreshing.

The interesting thing - my W$@SD is is down just slightly from normal, but I found that I was able to build much bigger pots through aggressive play. I was raising preflop so often that my opps just took it as a matter of course and almost forgot that I was representing strength.

It wasn't even a great run of cards really, I lost a ton of pots, but the ones I did win were very nice. I used alot of the plays I have seen Fnord and a few others post about here, and they worked great. I do think I stayed in a few hands too long however. I knew I was playing well when I would have to move tables because my opps were leaving. I'm pretty sure my play was taking them out of their comfort zone.

Any comments on these numbers?

Well, I can guess what PFR is - but what is it divided by? # hands or # flops seen.

What are the other acronyms. A n00b question I guess - I will take a pointer as well.

W$@SD is a funny number as lots of different factors drive it.

o How often you value bet the river (down, as you showdown fewer winners)
o How often you river bluff (down, as you get caught; but win rate goes up if done well)
o Missing river bets (up, showdown more winners against busted draws)
o Strong hand reading skills allowing for laydowns (up, duh)

55% seems to be a common number among winning players. I've heard of good players running between ~50% (aggro, not much game selection) to ~60% (laydown master.)

Also, aggression is different against different opponents. If they're passive calling stations it's about driving value and getting out of dodge when they wake up. If they're more aware, you use aggression to put pressure on them to make hands or concede pots.

Also, a lot of my thin pre-flop raising that get me in the 10% range comes from it being folding to MP/LP, where I can steal raise or raise a weak limp + the blinds with a playable hand (I like to do this without an Ace so I can steal Ace X X boards giving me almost a third card.) In a micro-limit game or a loose live game, these oportunities don't come up as often.

A couple things to keep in mind.

Don't tie yourself to a pot you raised pre-flop and got lots of callers with. If it's a horrible miss or you think someone else hit, just check/fold or take a free card. It's only one extra sb you spent on the raise. Knowing when not to make the follow-up flop bet can save you money, although you should be betting out on a lot of flops.

Also, with a big pot chasing with thinner holdings becomes more correct. So those loose calls and thin calldowns when you chose to make them cost you less money if they're incorrect. This creates some swings, but the higher win-rate compensates for it.

Here's a few of the more interesting hands. Some I annotated as being misplayed, would like to know what you think of the others.

#1

Poorly played pot. Raised preflop with 55 just to mix it up a bit. A bet on the turn probably would have taken this pot down as I find out at the end. I figure someone must have the J and wimp out on the turn...

#2 - I call UTG with a mediocre J9s. I was out of position for the call but felt like playing it. Flop second pair and a flush draw. A2 guy calls me all the way down the river, where I spike the heart. He had to know for sure his hand was no good on that last call.

#4 This is a reckless hand, but it didn't cost me a whole lot of money. I know Fnord says you can't create an image at the cheap tables, but I'm pretty sure this hand did. Look how slow they are playing their QQ after my show of aggression. This is an instance where the fish thinks they are beat by the A or K and refuses to lay down the PP. Lucky for them I was full of it.

1 - Don't bother, particularly against opponents that call too much. You won't get folds often enough or your 5s won't hold up if they're even good.

2 - Loose limp, but probably a good table for it. Well played

3 - Pot is small enough that you can fold to the turn raise if you're up for it. You're almost always on 2 outs with a passive player raising this board. Against an aggressive player, it becomes more important to call down.

4 - I might fire again on the turn, but it looks like a weak Ace/King that will take you to showdown...

5 - A crafty trick here is to call the 3-bet and pop him again on the turn.

6 - AQo is usually a muck to a raise, but you had 2 great reasons to 3-bet here when you only needed 1. He's a loose raiser and it's short-handed. Well played.

7 - Well played.

8 - Tough to find a river bet there. Well played.

9 - Interesting that just calling the 3-bet set-up a nice isolation raise. A case could be made for capping pre-flop at 2:1 on your money, but this worked out really well.

Tough to fold that one even though I knew there was a REAL good chance I was beat. Good point that the pot was small enough to fold it. If I do fold the winner there, the mistake is not as big. Maybe one day I can lay this one down, but not today. That's why I don't play NL.

You're right about the loose limp. I really like J9s and JTs for some reason. I'm winning 28.60 with those hands after playing 11,000 at a variety of levels. I was definitely out of position for the call this time though.

The rush continues..numbers from yesterday and today combined. My apologies to those that cannot appreciate the No-Stakes game.

.25/.50 limit
482 hands
19.29 VP$IP
33.3 WWSF
9.96 PFR
63.04 W@SD
+ 48.95 (20.3 BB/100)

.05/.10 limit
594 hands
21.04 VP$IP
30.81 WWSF
9.93 PFR
60.0 W@SD
+ 11.28 (18.99 BB/100)

Here's an interesting hand I had tonight. The preflop raiser actually gave me the opportunity to continue with this hand because of the implied pot odds on the flop. On the flop I have a gutshot that I am getting correct odds to call. On the turn I get a double gutshot draw.

PokerStars 0.25/0.50 Hold'em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with T, 9. CO posts a blind of $0.25.
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, MP2 raises, CO (poster) folds, Button calls, SB folds, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls.

Flop: (11.40 SB) 7, 6, K (5 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP1 checks, MP2 bets, Button calls, Hero calls, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls.

Turn: (7.70 BB) Q (4 players)
Hero checks, MP1 checks, MP2 bets, Button raises, Hero calls, MP1 folds, MP2 calls.

River: (13.70 BB) 8 (3 players)
Hero bets, MP2 calls, Button calls.

Final Pot: 16.70 BB
Main Pot: 16.70 BB, between Button, Hero and MP2.

A little loose pre-flop? Cold-Calling a raise in early position with unsuited connectors? Post flop I think was pretty good though. How effective is a check-raise on the river?

A little. I don't like throwing mid connectors away in the BB, because those are the kinds of hands that can crack the big cards and take down a nice pot. The bad part about this call is that I am not closing the pre-flop betting - still two more to act after me.

I thought seriously about check raising the river..but then I thought back to previous hands I've had. Holding the nuts or near-nuts and watching the river get checked through really sucks. I also read a post at 2+2 today advising against it. I didn't trust these players to put in another bet. My flop and turn calls were only correct with the implied odds if I made my hand. I wanted to make sure I at least delivered on that with the final pot size.

This is also an interesting hand, because of how little I made on it compared to if I had been in a better position. On the button and I get at least 3 more BB out of it.

Is it possible to cold call from a blind? I always thought a cold call was when you had no money in the pot.

Unsuited connectors suck, period.

Fold pre-flop, flop is fine, fold the turn, c/r the river
