So I'm multitabling huge tonight and I have seemed to pick up a lot of mid to big pocket pairs. For the sake of this discussion lets just say hands 77-JJ. Now, not to guarantee it, but for 90 percent of the flops I have seen at least one, if not two or three overcards. The tables have been uncharacteristically tight and i have been raising these hands preflop everytime with no raises before me. I figure I have to bet these to isolate, not to flop a set. Anyways, I keep getting donk betted into after these flops and I have started raising these bets a good amount of the time. The donks smooth call and check the turn, allowing me one more shot. Sometimes I get a free showdwon b/c of this raise on the flop. I am calling this a little experiment as I already do this a lot with gutshots and overs. These however are 4 and 6 outers while my 'set' draw is only 2 outs. So far I know it is a small ass sample and everyone will jump on me for saying this, but this has seemed to plug a bit of a leak in my game. I, like many other ppl, are generally lost when holding a hand such as TT and seeing a flop come Q94 five handed. This raise saves me at the very least one small bet and sometimes much more. I have yet to be raised back; however, I do not make this play on coordinated paired boards. I only make it on boards which I feel I can get the free turn out of my opponent. Like I said, so far, so good. I'll follow later after I play another 600 hands tonight, then we'll see if I'm crying or laughing all the way to the bank.

small sample size?
I hope you're not raising your pocket pairs with more than 1 limper...

I think this play has its merits depending on the situation. I need position, and only the better in the pot. If there are many to act after me I am probably walking away.
However in a spot where there is the one better and one or two behind me I love raising here. If all fold and I am heads up and checked to I will often fire the turn if it was harmless. I find this often wins right then and there. If the turn was another over I am checking behind and taking my free card.
Like all things poker.....my play depends on my reads, and position.

I've said this a couple of times, but by being aggressive when it's cheap, the poker gods seem to favor you later in the hand. By taking controll of the hand early, you give yourself the opportuinty to be in the best situation later.
To put it simply if on the flop I make a read, and decide I'm going to the river come hell or high water, my call button is broken, and I raise/re-raise on the flop. Then if I don't improve I check and call the turn and river. If I do improve, I get aggressive again. For some odd reason, I make more money when I do it, force people to play more timidly around me, and good things always seem to happen.
Like bruson says: This game favors those with the backbone, and not the wishbone.

The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?
