I have seen the words fold equity, pot equity, etc used in a ton of posts. I always figured I would eventually figure it out from it's context in the posts. Still haven't. What is it? I should know this already.

I believe it is similar to Stockholder's Equity.
Assets + Liabilities = Stockholder's Equity

Triptan3s,
Can you extend that analogy a little further?

fold equity = expected value of making your opponents fold. essentially the basis for blind stealing and the flop follow up.
pot equity = expected value of making your opponents call. pumping flush draws is the best example for this.

Initially funny to me, this actually makes sense now at second glance:
(Pot Equity + Fold Equity) + (-)Opponents Equity = Hand Equity
Thus, if you can reason that either your pot or fold equity are likely greater than your opponents...than you're in business.

Fold Equity = The amount you will win when your opponent folds (1.5 blinds on a steal attempt, or the current pot size) times the probability that your opponent will fold.
So, If it is folded to you in the small blind, and you raise, you are investing 1.5 small bets to win 1.5 small bets. So, this is a +EV play with any 2 cards if you think the big blind will fold more than 50% of the time.
Pot Equity = The total amount of the pot times the percent chance that you will win the pot.
So, with the nut flush draw on the flop you will make your flush about 1 in 3 times, so with 3 or more opponents, your pot equity is greater than the amount of money that you invest in the pot, so a raise is correct (if you expect 3 or more calls.)

To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.
