When playing at micro limit holdem, and you know that you are beat at showdown, is it worth the extra few pennies to call and see what the opponent is playing, so you can take notes of how and what they play, position……… I know you can study them for free too, but why not call or a few pennies?

Or, is this creating a bad habit, which will need to be broken when you are moving up the limits?

When I say micro limit, I mean anything up too .25/.50, but you guys with the big bankroll micro limit maybe up in the dollars.

I’ve read lots and lots of posts and have not come across this question, so hopefully its not a repost.

In a few rare circumstances, its OK to look the guy up. Its by far NOT the norm. It'll cost you a LOT of money in the long run. I mean, at $10/$20, its like, "Ok, I know I'm beat, but I'm going to give you TWENTY BUCKS to see it". Thats really, really, not a good idea.

But if you come across a guy and youre just completely baffled, "Why the hell did he play it THAT way?" its ok to look him up and get a note on him. Its just an expensive note.

On the turn the when you add up the chance that you have (or will have) the best hand to the amount of fold equity you have you can tip the scales from a check to a bet. In the same way, on the river you can tip the scales from a fold to a call by adding up the chance your opponent is bluffing (which alone might not be enough to call) to the meta-game equity you gain by looking him up.

Ok, so that argument is kind of fabricated, because while you frequently have fold-equity you don't frequently have meta-game-looking-someone-up-equity, but I still like the parallel.

I would like rephrase your question, "If you know you are beaten is it sometimes right to call anyway?". The answer is yes depending upon the odds the pot is giving you. If you are getting something like 1:20 odds, he only has to be bluffing 5% of the time to make a call justified. If its a habitual bluffer, your odds to call will be less. In many cases, especially if you are confused by someone's play, you will have the odds to make the crying call.

Otherwise, I would say you are wasting your money and I don't care how small an amount it is if you are serious about improving your play. Even if it's the best read available, you won't see the same players often enough online to take advantage of your note. Also, if you are observant enough, you can get the same notes from watching others showdown against your villian, and getting your notes for free.

"Just a few pennies more to call" is the swan song of the fish and is what makes limit profitable for good players.

I agree! Like if there's a few people in the hand on the river and I'm sure I'm beat I'll fold and let someone else call lol.

But the whole "it's 2 cents to call vs it's $20 to call" argument is pretty bad. You should always think in terms of BB. Poor players think of how much money calling or raising will cost them. Remember it's not money, it's chips.

If you think your call for just pennies then that's not correct.
1) You lost 1 BB
2) you'll create yourself a bad habit.. That's if you call once, you'll make your call again and again... no matter what Limit you play. BB is what it count and it'll add up.
