Played a 1-3 spread limit game with my brother who came in to town last night. We didn't have alot of money to play with (about $100 each) so we found this 1-3 spread limit game. It was really weird. My question is - is this how low limit poker is generally played? If so, I dont know if I ever want to do this again.

In the first 2 hours of play, I had AA twice, KK, QQ, JJ each once, and they were all cracked and I lost decent amounts on each hand. Never tripped up with any of them, and usually lost to over pair (A) when I had the KK, QQ, JJ. Lost once w/ AA against 55 that a player tripped, and once AA against straight draw on river. Then, we go through about a 2 hour period where EVERY winning hand is a flush. People are playing ANY suited hand. You absolutely could not get any one to fold these, and they hit almost every hand for the flush. Even the other players said they were resigned to the fact after about an hour that it was flush or better to win any hand at this table.

Lots of players were going all the way to the river with gutshot straight draws and flush draws. Unfortunately, they almost always won with hose hands. I tried betting into pots as much as possible when I was ahead, but usually got drawn out anyway.

Is this how it goes in low limit games? Seems like a crapshoot. Kinda like in a home game where there are wild cards and everyone just plays out the hands to see who got dealt the best one. These flushes were just unreal.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

if limit were a crapshoot, we wouldn't bother spending so much time making money at it. save your bad beat stories for the 'its all bad' forum.

Casino play at that level is nothing but a fish pool. Be prepared to take massive beats but you'll also win big pots. 2/4 online is like 5/10 live and probably even 4/8. If you play 3/6 online 10/20 is more your style.

I didn't say limit was a crapshoot. I asked if these lower level limit games are all like this. Secondly, this post was not intended to be a bad beat story. I am a new poker player trying to figure out what games are good for me and where I can make some money. So I am looking for the experienced players out there to tell me whether this is typical at low levels, or if all limit is somewhat like this, etc.

Didnt mean to offend, just looking for some advice and perspective.

My main point is to ask if:

Big pairs maybe dont hold up as well in these low level games
It is normal to see so many flush draws hit with multiple players holding all their suited cards
Are there levels where the play is not so loose, and what levels are those
And lastly, is what I saw last night typical of limit in general, or just low level limit games like the one I was playing, or just an anomaly alltogether

are u asking whether 1-3 spread limit is normal in a casino, or are u asking whether getting sucked out on again and again is normal at low limits?

to the first question, i say no, though spread limit HE can be found in several vegas casinos like luxor and excalibur. i would just avoid it. when we refer to "limit" HE here, we are talking about fixed limit not spread limit.

with regard to suckouts, all entry-level low limit games are the same, whether it's 0.25/0.50 limit at UB or 0.50/1 at party or 2/4 at the taj mahal or 3/6 full kill at casino arizona. your experience was 100% typical. read small stakes holdem (SSH) by 2+2 publishing for advice on how to crush such games, as most of us here do on a regular basis.

see the "offline casinos" forum for more info on what to expect from a B&M experience.

its not a crapshoot.. the fish are schooling against you ... one by themselves is making a mistake by calling with a gutshot, but with 7 to 9 other players, playing til the river, they have odds to draw to their hand .

you sound like your being too tight, high pockets go down in value unless they set on the flop. i would play alot of suited connectors from late position. play any pocket pair from any position for a set, and raise with TT and above.

i play both limit and no limit, i feel limit is a very very important part of learning no limit. like Chezj recommended, small stakes holdem by sklansky/malmuth really helps you count your hidden outs, as well as help you decide whether you should continue on the flop or not.. also wouldnt hurt to learn how to count pot odds/count bets in the pot.
