I've got a little spare time at work, so I'm going through last night's hands. Bear in mind I was playing with a bunch of FTR dudes who bought in with as much as $250, so this wasn't your typical .02/.04 table.

This shows the sort of hand I just find impossible to lay down. It seems like it could be so strong, but hardly ever is. Obviously everything is situational, but what are some guidelines for playing a hand like this?

Winner didn't even know it was a pie-eating contest

When was the best time to stop pursuing this, and how would I have known? I know each hand is hermetic, but it's hard to put aside recent memories of people winning with Ace high or worse.

It does seem like every time I have trips, someone has a straight; every time I have a straight, someone has a flush; every time I have a flush, etc. You get the picture. Fail-safe point here?

Hand 1: Full table I fold pre-flop. Easy flop fold.
Hand 2: The river bet is horrible, you beat a bluff or busted draw so take the showdown you bought on the turn.
Hand 3: I play it the same. It's not chasing when you're betting.
Hand 4: I sometimes call the flop 3-bet so I can pop the turn. River is interesting, reads would help.

hand 1: fold the flop without a second thought.
hand 2: fold or raise the flop.
hand 3: well played
hand 4: call the river. any 4 flush or 4 to a straight and it's likely someone has it (especially since they are betting into you)

Well, at that point the table was full of FTR guys who bet and raised every hand they were dealt, so I couldn't say for sure what anybody had.
