I think a thread like this was started in the short-handed NL forum by Lukie a while back. Anyways, it's something that's relevant in all forms of poker, so I figured I'd start one here.

Basically, the idea is to indicate certain tendencies in your game, or ones you notice in others that are exploitable by an observant opponent. Or, specific ways of taking advantage of those tendencies.

For instance, taking a raise, bet, bet, check line only with ace high or very weak hands, allowing an opponent to make high expectation value bets against you on the river. Possible solution: occasionally check-raise one pair hands on the river against these players.

1. aggro players (bluff too much):
-induce bluffs/raise thin less
-value bet stronger hands on river, check behind weaker holdings
many aggros can't help themselves and will bet river regardless as a bluff if you checked behind on turn (in position) or check river to them (oop)
Induce and call their bluffs w Ahigh hands and mediocre holdings
If that player checks to you on river, don't try to bluff them (they will bluff the busted hands but check call w mediocre hands)
So on river (oop), value bet strong hands, check to induce bluffs w mediocre hands.
On river (in position), when he checks, check behind mediocre/bad holdings, bet stronger holdings for value.
-on flop/turn, try c/rs more often w strong holdings

2.calling stations (call too much)
-make thinner value bets/raises
-don't try to bluff/semibluff them

3.passives in general
-take free cards whenever you need them
-don't try too many c/rs

4-the loose limpers
-value raise preflop lighter
-isolate isolate isolate

5-Tighties
-play straight-forward poker
-try some bluffs
-steal their blinds more often

6-maniacs
-call them down, if heads up, with any pair
-raise for value 2pair+

No, you really don't, not if used properly. The question is when and with what. Or do you mean you need to stop open limping?

I can't speak for Deuce, but I agree that open limping is bad, bad, bad!

I will NEVER open-limp, except for those cases where its folded to me in the SB, and I have a mediocre hand that I want to see a flop with. The big difference out of the SB is that I am out of position on EVERY street.

I will rarely limp behind other limpers, and then only in a multi-way pot with a good drawing hand, or with a baby pair where I am hoping to flop a set.

In general, if there is someone in the pot before me, its time to either raise/re-raise, or fold.
