First off, never, ever chide a bad player for playing poor starting hands. That's bad business.

What I do instead is ENCOURAGE not just playing bad cards, but chide the player for not getting an extra bet or raise in when he had the best hand. Example from this past weekend:

Playing live 4/8 HE. Unraised, a few limpers. I had KTo in the BB. Flop comes K92 with 2 clubs. Turn is 7 (non-club) river is 3 (non-club). I'm betting the whole way and UTG is the only one to call at the river. UTG turns over 7c/3c. As he mucks his cards and rakes in the pot, I tell him he missed a bet on the end there. That he should have raised and gotten an extra bet out of me I would have (gladly) paid.

My thinking is this: if I can get a player like that to be more aggressive, he'll put more money into the pot when he doesn't have as much of a hand as he thinks he has and I'll take more of his money in the end. Not only that, his betting/raising will give me more info about HIS hand, making it easier on me to bet/raise/fold. Seems to me to be a much better tactic than telling him he's a horrible player, shouldn't play those cards, etc.

Another tactic I'll use is to seemingly sympathize with a losing player. "Man, the cards just aren't falling for you tonight, are they?" (as he turns over A4o) Or "Hang in there, you never know what the river will bring." Or even "See, if you stay in there sometimes it works out." (as he turns over K2o for 2 pair, hitting the 2 on the river)
