You would have to have a good read NOT to make this move. Your typical player would not raise this flop. They would smooth call and raise the turn. I would actually need a read that says, "he'll raise on the flop here with the ace", as it is by far not the 'standard' thing to do.
FWIW, if he threebets, easy fold.
If he calls, easy c/f.

Yeah, donk is a pretty bad floater, although if the flop was 3-way I would be even more certain he doesn't have an ace. That being said, I think you were bluffing with the best hand.
If he calls the turn I would look him up for 1 bet, particularly if the river is a non-diamond.
