When the heart came at the end I wanted to represent the flush given the way I had played the flop but he insta-called so wanted to see if the line I took once I hadn't improved made sense based on previous streets

No.
Just going by the fact that he ended up in a 3-bet pot with T7os I can promise you that attempting to bluff players such as this one is very very -EV. Just value bet him to death later when you have a legitimate hand.
Even if the guy wasnt a total moron, after he 3-bets on the flop I give up on a blank turn - you have pretty much no read at all on what this guy is playing from the blind other than that he REALLY likes this flop. You could easily be drawing dead by the turn.
FWIW I *usually* only try to rep a flush on the river after a sucessful "free card" play with OESD, overcards etc on a two suited flop (3rd on river)

It makes sense that you might have a flush but that doesn't mean anyone's going to fold top pair or better. You're better off just calling the flop and folding the turn UI than trying to bluff someone at this level.

Yeah, when I saw what he turned over I realized my mistake right away and I really have to adjust my game to not bluff as much at these levels even if it makes sense..I mean for me, I'd put something like AK or an overpair right into my opponents range with that line, but that doesn't mean everyone would even be thinking about what I might have as opposed to what they have.
It's just one of those things I guess, but looking at it more I'm happy with the way I played it and think it should have worked at higher levels...and of course with no heart on the river I'm letting it go.
