Okay, I got dealt JJ on the best position and played it hard, but did I play it right?

Texas Hold'em Limit ($0.25/$0.50)
Seat 10 (thats me) is the button.
Seat 1: Anapiana ($3.50 in chips)
Seat 2: EricY ($24.48 in chips)
Seat 3: Johnsonch ($15.80 in chips)
Seat 4: lmao@you ($24.75 in chips)
Seat 5: Mcgrory ($229 in chips)
Seat 6: Fluffycat ($15.48 in chips)
Seat 7: ink65 sits out
Seat 8: CryMeARvr ($2.65 in chips)
Seat 9: ishin ($42.10 in chips)
Seat 10: jnz ($4.20 in chips)
Anapiana: posts small blind $0.15
EricY: posts big blind $0.25

----- HOLE CARDS -----
dealt to jnz J J
Johnsonch: calls $0.25
lmao@you: folds
Mcgrory: calls $0.25
Fluffycat: raises $0.50
CryMeARvr: folds
ishin: folds
jnz: raises $0.75
Anapiana: folds
EricY: folds
Johnsonch: calls $0.50
Mcgrory: folds
Fluffycat: calls $0.25

----- FLOP ----- 3 8 5
Johnsonch: checks
Fluffycat: checks
jnz: bets $0.25
Johnsonch: calls $0.25
Fluffycat: calls $0.25

My first reaction when I saw the flop was a silent "yippie", I thought it had missed everyone, but that I was sitting on the best pair, even if anyone else also had a pair - if theyd had a bigger pair than mine (QQ, KK, AA) they wouldnt just have called preflop.

But as there was two hearts on the flop I was concerened of a flush draw, and as both of my opponents checked thru thats what I put them both on.

----- TURN ----- 3 8 5 6
Johnsonch: checks
Fluffycat: checks
jnz: bets $0.50
Johnsonch: calls $0.50
Fluffycat: calls $0.50

My brain activity was really limited here, I just looked at the card, noted that it wasnt a heart and that they both checked, so I figured they still were drawing and that I had to protect my hand ie. make them pay for their draws. So I bet.

----- RIVER ----- 3 8 5 6 7
Johnsonch: checks
Fluffycat: checks
jnz: bets $0.50
Johnsonch: raises $1
Fluffycat: calls $1
jnz: calls $0.50

Omg, I got check-raised. But at the time I didnt notice, brain activity was limited to looking for that heart that hadnt come. I didnt even think it was a bluff coz I wasnt thinking at all. The pot was really big so I just called without second thought.

----- SHOW DOWN -----
Johnsonch: shows 9 9 (A Straight, Nine high)
Fluffycat: mucks hand
jnz: mucks hand
Johnsonch collected $7.75 from Main pot
----- SUMMARY -----
Total pot $8.15 Main pot $7.75 Rake $0.40

I had totally missed that straight possibility!

I was just laughing when I realized what had just happened, he caught a 7 on the river, completing his draw. I wasnt upset though, but I wish I hadnt paid the 2.50 in order to see it happen :> Newbie as I am, Im not that good at pot odds, so Im wondering if I still played it "right"? And did my opponent play it right checking-calling his way to the river with pocket 9's?

I would like to learn as much as I can from this, Ive paid for it afterall hehe.

Thanks,
- jnz

Its kinda a scary board. But by the river, only 50c more to call you can't really fold that. The guy with 99 was probably thinking along the lines you were, a overpair. Just so happens he got lucky and hit a straight..

Depending on your read of the guy it looks fine. If he's the kind of person who will only bet/raise the river with the goods then you can safely muck it. I play this level too and with this board you can usually safely muck your pair pretty easily on the river.

My .02
Superb play sir...I always call 20% of my stack off with a gutshot draw. Excuse me while I race for my wallet.

You didn't play this hard, though. Was it an ultra-tight/cautious table? Raises double or triple the size you raised would have been hard (ish). $.25 bet on the flop? I'd have bet $1.50. Anyone still in on the turn? $3.

His pocket nines are top pair, so he had a right to stay the course. You needed to convince him you had an overpair, which means betting hard and ruthlessly from the start (except on the river - you're clearly beaten when he raises there).

Hehe, as CrunchyNuts pointed out in the following post I was playing limit, so I was betting as hard as I could - with a better pair - but I shouldve realized I was beaten by something other than a higher pair when the river came along with his raise.

Well, you live and learn, hopefully.
