Ok, so I'm trying to work on not spewing marginal hands in the later betting rounds. After some conversations with another FTRer, I've decided that in the past I have had a tendency to spew the later betting rounds with marginal hands. I would typically bet to try and push them out and not want to give up any free cards with hands like middle pair when no strength has been shown against me. This probably left me exploitable against good observant players as well as weak (timid) players that would just call down their TPWK.

So, now I'm try to strike a balance between not missing bets or giving away too many free cards, but yet playing prudently. And checking where I think a weaker hand probably doesn't call too many more bets anyway. Or also in situations where I do not want to be c/r'ed or raised. (I mean, no one wants to be c/r'ed, but I',m referring to situations where I'm not completely sure a head of time that if I bet and get c/r'ed or raised that I should fold or not.)

Here are a few examples from my first session back to the grind after a long absence.

Good application of prudent play or just weak play?

Hand 1: $1/$2 LHE (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is CO with T, A.
4 folds, MP3 calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls, MP3 calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) T, Q, 3 (3 players)
BB checks, MP3 checks, Hero bets, BB calls, MP3 folds.

Turn: (4.25 BB) 7 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

River: (4.25 BB) 7 (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Hand 2: $1/$2 LHE (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with A, K. SB posts a blind of $1.
BB raises, 1 fold, Hero 3-bets, 1 fold, MP2 calls, 2 folds, SB (poster) calls, BB calls.

Flop: (12 SB) 3, T, K (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, MP2 calls, SB folds, BB calls.

Turn: (7.50 BB) 5 (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, MP2 calls, BB folds.

River: (9.50 BB) 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, MP2 checks.

I was going to give a couple more, but don't want to continue to run through the HH. I'll post more as they happen.

Thanks for the critique!

I like hand 1.

Hand 2 I probably bet again because he will often have something to call with (mid pp, weaker king) rather than a flush draw. Plus the way the hand went down, he probably knows we will check-call a high % of the time if he bets, so he won't be bluffing very often.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I think both of these hands depend quite a bit on the type of villain you are up against.

Hand 1: Generally, I like to bet the turn and check through the river here so that I don't end up giving draws like KJ, AJ, AK, etc, a free river. However, I will check through the turn here occasionally if I am up against a villain that plays tricky and is capable of check-raising the turn with a wide variety of hands ranging from a set to a draw. This type of villain is also the type most likely to bluff the river.

Hand 2: Vs an aggressive player who will "value" bet his KQ, KJ, maybe even AT when checked to on the river, I like the river check. Vs a passive calling station, I think you have to bet the river for value. BTW, I'm confused about the preflop action....How did BB raise to start the hand? Is that supposed to be UTG?

Hand 1 I fold the river fairly frequently unless I'm sure he'll bluff a lot. Pot is pretty small and I just dont see how he cant have you beat unless he's bluffing KJ.

Hand 2 yeah the preflop actions a little weird. I'm fine with your river check/call against almost all players.

Well, in hand 1. The villain was pretty aggressive and I felt like if he hit the queen, he would have lead out on the flop. Or maybe pulled some kind of turn c/r crap. I didn't really feel like the 7's helped him. So I actually felt like I was ahead on the river and he wasn't going to call a river bet unless he pulled something out of his A$#. In which case my river bet would earn me a raise or fold. But as I said, he usually seemed pretty aggressive and I felt like he might bet a weaker hand on the end.

In the second hand.... I'll was admittedly a little timid because of the possible rivered flush. The way it was played, I don't think there was too much else that makes sense for him to raise the river with besides the flush, that I could beat anyway. So it probably would have been a pretty easy fold.
