Since this forum has...........basically no posts, here's a section of your O8 game where, if played well, you can add a lot of profitability to your O8 game. For example, a hand history:
Omaha Hi/Lo Limit ($10/$20) - 2005/01/31 - 20:22:40 (ET)
Table 'Eagle' Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: FLIPTOGOOD ($81 in chips)
Seat 2: RTFirefly ($486 in chips)
Seat 3: Clamydia ($252 in chips)
Seat 4: HarryVardon ($986.50 in chips)
Seat 5: 1122 ($362 in chips)
Seat 6: Sirens ($668.50 in chips)
Seat 7: lars_vegas ($335.50 in chips)
Seat 8: MAKOTO ($115 in chips)
Seat 9: Bastien ($684.50 in chips)
Seat 10: Me ($177 in chips)
1122: posts small blind $5
Sirens: posts big blind $10
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Me[4d 2d Ah 7s]
lars_vegas: raises $10 to $20
MAKOTO: calls $20
Bastien: folds
Me: calls $20
FLIPTOGOOD: folds
RTFirefly: folds
Clamydia: calls $20
HarryVardon: folds
1122: folds
Sirens: folds
*** FLOP *** [Td Ks 3s]
lars_vegas: bets $10
MAKOTO: calls $10
Me: calls $10
Clamydia: calls $10
[As an aside, this play here was really horrible. I do have an excuse (damn salesmen at door), but it was really bad =(. Don't worry, this is one of those 'guy plays bad but still wins pot, what a lucksac' stories.]
*** TURN *** [Td Ks 3s] [5c]
lars_vegas: checks
MAKOTO: checks
Me: bets $20
Clamydia: calls $20
lars_vegas: calls $20
MAKOTO: calls $20
*** RIVER *** [Td Ks 3s 5c] [Kc]
Here's the point where the average Omaha player would check/fold, since 'although he might be bluffing I don't have the cards to call him down' or some other junk. But this river is bad for bad for anyone who doesn't have a King or a set already, so there's a decent chance of stealing the pot here. Other examples include betting the river when it makes a flush when you've read someone for a straight.
lars_vegas: checks
MAKOTO: checks
Me: bets $20
Clamydia: folds
lars_vegas: folds
MAKOTO: folds
Me collected $212 from pot
Was I lucky, in a sense? Sure, it's lucky that no-one had a King or a set, but I only need to win about 1 in 10 of these pots on the river for river bets to be profitable. It helps, of course, that I've played with lars_vegas quite a bit and know him to be a good player, and from what I saw at the table MAKOTO was quite decent too. Clamydia, IIRC, was pretty bad (or possibly someone sitting near him on the table...I can't remember too well and don't have access to my notes right now) so he might be inclined to call with midpair or so, or then again could be scared by the 3rd king - it's hard to tell what bad players will do.
But, like I said, you only need to win one in a few of these pots for a river bet to be profitable. So next time your A2 nutlow nutflush draw misses, consider a river bet rather than just check/folding. It all depends, of course.
