I've been thinking a lot about betting behavior lately and what it does for reads. A couple profiles I've noticed, and some hypotheses about their effectiveness:
Fast Action - lightening quick, often checking 'auto-raise' or 'auto-call' buttons,or bet right on your heels. Often not very strong...and will bluff quite a bit. Often action junkies, and short-handed they appear as virtual maniacs.
Thinker- play slowly, but not quite enough to draw bandwidth ridicule, but every move seems like an out-counting exercise. Can derive success from impatient opponents to go after them and try to push them.
Robot - Seems to wait the exact same amount of time before acting. Seldom says more than 'nh' or 'ty'. Very tough to read, except through call downs.
Normal- varies speed of checking, raising, betting...usually not random if you play with them long enough. Mix of good and bad players. Most common profile.
Random - changes up patterns effectively...can really surprise you when they turn up the goods. Mix of good and bad players---mostly bad. Very hard to tell apart from other styles over one session. Can be very effective short-handed.
I've experimented with some of these methods myself, but have yet to come up with any proven results. Perhaps this study doesn't apply at most low-limit games where the opponents are multi-tabling or else just plain clueless. Nonetheless, does anyone use these methods? Anyone have thoughts about their effectiveness?

Overall, I try to act quickly in limit games to keep the game moving and not give my opponents too much time to think about what they're doing.
Between multi-tablers and internet lag you need to be careful with these reads.
Also, consider that the best tourney NL player I know (soupie), always stalls about 5-10 seconds before acting on anything that isn't a trivial fold.
