rowhousepd can only hope to improve
I've been trying to plug a leak of mine which I'm sure many newbies like me have -- playing overcards on the flop. After losing too many hands with them, recently I've been trying to fold overcards ... unless they are 1) huge suited hole like this one, 2) I'm in position, and 3) I'm only facing 1-2 opponents. That's sound reasoning, no? Let me know if that strategy is even too loose.

Anyhow I can't exactly call this a bad beat, but I'm not sure if I should have seen this through to the showdown. Keep in mind that this villain is an agro player, and I turned a flush AND straight draw and these are. (Plus these are micolimits). Should I lay down these kind of hands:

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with A, K
UTG calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, MP2 calls, 4 folds, BB 3-bets, 1 fold, Hero calls, MP2 calls

Flop: (10.4 SB) J, 4, 10 (3 players)
BB bets, Hero calls, MP2 calls

Turn: (6.7 BB) 8 (3 players)
BB bets, Hero calls, 1 fold

River: (8.7 BB) A (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB 3-bets, Hero calls

Total pot: $1.47 (14.7 BB) | Rake: $0.07

Results:
BB had A, A (three of a kind, Aces).
Hero had A, K (one pair, Aces).
Outcome: BB won $1.40

Don't fold this in a million years.

First, cap the flop. You have AK suited. The ONLY situation in which you don't want to cap this flop is if you have a specific read or statistic on this villain that he only 3-bets hands that are equal or better than AKs. And that read better be very specific, because very few players have a 3-betting range that narrow.

Second, you have a straight draw AND 2 overcards on the flop, plus a backdoor flush draw. Seriously, this is a GREAT flop for AKs. Now you can either call and try to hit your draw, or raise and see where you are. But no way are you getting rid of this hand. Most of the time, any ace, king, OR queen, or 2 running hearts, is going to be enough to win you the hand. You are getting 10 to 1 on your call in a situation where you usually have a 22 percent chance of winning the hand exclusive of any fold equity. In other words, you are getting twice the odds you need to call.

The turn makes your hand even better. Now, you have the nut flush draw AND the nut straight draw, plus your two overcards which may be good if either is paired. That is 12 DEFINITE outs, plus 6 dirty outs. Again, many players would raise this turn and try and force a fold. That is a correct play. But a call is also correct, as you are getting 6 to 1 on your call and you have at least a 25 percent chance of winning the hand and possibly a 40 percent chance.

River you hit a dirty out. Nothing wrong with what you did. Also nothing wrong with a flat call.

So why are you so worried about playing this hand wrong? Guess what. Almost always, they DON'T have pocket aces when you have ace-king. This is a cooler. Most of the time, your dirty outs will hold up. Some of the time, your ace-king will even hold up unimproved. Some of the time, you will have enough fold equity to drive the other players out with aggression. And a significant percentage of the time, you will draw out to the nuts and get paid off. (As you surely would have had a queen or heart hit this river.)

Humans were put on this earth to bet these sorts of hands in limit hold 'em.
