I make this mistake all the time, and its always at the higher limits. I'm working on realizing that three-bet on the turn will win me more money in the long run, and if i'm re-raised theres a good chance he does have the straight or trips, but if he just calls then most likely doesn't.
I'm starting to think 'what would I have done if this was the .5/1 or even the .25/.5 game?' I have found situations where I wouldn't cap in the 1/2 game where I would in the lower stakes, which probably should be the other way around. Its a very conservative approach, but thats another one of my crazy 'theories' or rather just explanations. I'm workin' on it, I just started two-tabling the 1/2 games .
But I wonder what Fnord will say.

It seems you misread him as having a straight instead of two pair.
Interestingly enough, if you thought he had the straight you should have either check/called or check/folded the river. I don't understand why you would only call his reraise on the turn and then come on betting on the river.
After his reraise I think he could have had 5 possible hands as it seemed obvious that he hit the flop and improved on the turn.
QJ
5T
AT
KT
TT (maybe...)
The only probable hand that you are losing to is QJ, so I think a reraise on the turn is the stronger more aggressive play.
BTW: This is my first post here, I hope it helps you out =)

3 bet the turn. Everything else is fine.

Three beting the turn might have been a good idea to see where you stand. He might cap it here but its pretty bad to stay in on the gut, im not a huge fan on staying on bets to hit a 4 outter unless your getting pretty good implied odds. I would have been worried more about him haveing tens in the hole, some people like to see to the river just to make sure they wouldnt hit, almost gives them a set of comfort to know that they didnt miss out on a big hand. Considering most of the people who play poker have no idea what they are doing. Three bet the turn so he will realise that you arent here for happy meal money and make him pay for his dumb T5 hand.
