I just couldn't believe he had a three. About half way through the turn, I began to suspect he had sevens. How should I have handled this hand?

preflop is fine, flop cap is kinda leaky with the paired board. the check/3bet says "i've got 77 or a 3" I'm inclined to call down unimproved if you have to show it down

what do we know about villain?
His check 3 bet says he has you beat.

I don't mind the flop cap but when he keeps firing on the turn, I think we have to call down.
A turn raise is only bad because getting 3 bet here sucks.
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.
