I assumed his initial raise is either high PP or 3 low cards, so I assumed the chances of trips for villian are low

 6th seems like a bet to me too, you say you assume he doesn't have trips often in the OP and I agree, also your hand looks more like you're going low, I would not be surprised if he called with just 88 plus a low draw. also surely he would lead again with trips.
