Being used to playing Hold'em, I have a situation which seems to happen frequently.
I play fairly small stakes 7 card stud (.10/.20 and .25/.50) where there are often alot of callers right to the end.
I find it difficult to know where I'm at on 7th street - and I am often not sure whether to bet for value or check when I have a decent hand. I know in holdem, in this situation, if you aren't sure you should check because only a hand that can beat you will call or reraise, but in 7 card stud, I usually only get to 7th street with a quality hand and I seem to check too much and lose that extra bet.
Does a good player check when they aren't sure or is aggression better in the long run? Maybe it's my lack of skill in reading hands, but I've seen players call to the end with four of a kind and only raise on the end, or they're chasing you along with two crappy pairs and get a full house on 7th street !
Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Martin

Stud is not a very static game. So much changes during the hand. If you could, would you post a few hands that caused you to post this? I would be happy to comment them.

Assume you raise on 3rd street with split aces, bet all the way, and your opponent has been calling you down with a probable smaller pair. On the river, one of three situations is likely to be the case: they either have one unimproved pair, two pair, or trips. If you check, unless the player is extremely timid, he/she will value bet the latter two, and check behind with the first. So, if you check with the intention of calling, you gain nothing when your hand is good, but lose a bet when it isn't. By betting, however, you lose a bet whenever your hand is not good (identical to check-calling), but gain a bet whenever the player doesn't improve but calls anyways. So in general, you should usually lean towards betting. The only time you should lean towards checking is when your opponent is very conservative, in which case you might consider checking with the intention of folding.
