Call me a nit, but out of position I fold the flop. If you call it's about the same as calling with a gutshot IMO (4 outs: 2 aces and 2 kings). There's just too high of a chance that at least one of those two already has a 9, or will hit a flush/higher 2 pair (in the case of a hand like AJTx) before the river.
Being out of position and slightly ahead or way, way behind we will only end up getting money into the pot when it's the latter.
Hitting that king on the river just made things really ugly because he very likely has the quads and is hoping you have AA or KK (or a super loose JJ/QQ) to pay him off with. Sane players won't bet there with anything but AA or the 9.
Still, unless I have a read that he is sane/incapable of bluffing all 3 streets, I probably end up calling and crying.
Also, this scenario doesn't come up all the time, but it isn't too rare either. Here's a hand from my session today in fact. Guess what each of us has

River: (19.00 BB) 8 (2 players)

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I almost folded the flop, then thought "what the hell I'll call". I usually give up when I'm drawing thin, at best. I guess it was an OOP float which isn't a good idea anyway.
I folded river, just couldn't imagine I was ahead.
umm, you have AA or a 6 and he has 88?

Yeah, even in position this is a highly speculative hand since you have to let it go on the turn if bet into unless you hit your 4-outer.

Probably a very good fold.
